Hi Daniel, I had the same issue with my good car a little while back. Both my upper and lower ball joints just needed to be lubricated. I suspect that the upper joint might often get missed by some lube shops that don't know there's a fitting on the top of the upper control arm. The ball joint gets excercised when you either turn the wheel or when the suspension is jostled. My low mileage car might not have ever really seen any lubrication of these ball joints.
