When I check bulbs I remove it and "flick" it with a finger. Watch the filiments. If one end wiggles around it can make contact and work for a while. Hard to describe, easy to demonstrate. Annoying when it happens and gives you intermittant problems. Testing IS important though. Very hard to visually inspect electrical equipment.
