I found the valve train can be responsible for these ticks and perhaps an exhaust gasket leak. I had this problem on my old car. I removed the valve covers and performed a valve adjustment. Afterwards I still heard the sound but it was muffled and the engine was more pleasant. I found a tiny leak in the exhaust gasket on the drivers side. This was the second culprit.
