The shocks don't get harder as they age. Dave is just saying that the original shocks, which were built to the '80's notion of a "performance" suspension, are hard as rocks. That's the way performace suspensions were designed in the 80's. Today we have much better shock designs with valving that permits a reasonably soft ride while still maintaining control.
