In the bad old days a battery could last 10 or more years. Going dead just one time wouldn't kill it forever. Contemporary "sealed" batteries aren't air tight -- that's the reason for those pads and creams you're supposed to put on the terminals -- they just don't allow you to replace the lost water. Ask anyone who remembers and they will confirm that landfill regulations have lowered battery quality. Good for the environment, but harder on the end user.
