Dave, Your problem is sure unusual. What exactly happened to work harden the end of the dip stick? Was is rubbing against something? Anyway, it is likely the tip is at the bottom of the pan and will stay there. There is also a screen to protect the pump from sucking up metal shavings. It probably is not a big deal to worry about. IF what is left of the dip stick still allows you to check the oil level you are still good. Otherwise you might want to get a replacement.
