I also had a similar problem. It turned out that the reluctor pulse coil inside the ignition distributor has seized so I was not getting any vacuum advance. I stripped down my distributor and freed off the reluctor pulse coil assembly. I also found the engine ran cooler after I rebuilt my distributor.
