Let me throw one more suggestion in for protecting the torsion bars: Get a short length of vacuum hose (like 1/8" i.d.) and slip it over the drill bit. Trim it so that the length of drill bit that sticks out is equal to only the depth you want to drill. Voila, no drill bit to nick the torsion bar and a depth stop (just don't push or you could compress the hose and go deeper than you want.)
