I'm actually a little more inclined to believe this. If you've seen the crash test footage, the cars have 4 spoke wheels, as they did in some of the factory shots of the "black" cars used for training. I also know that Lotus did indeed have a big clear out not long ago and a large number of parts were either thrown out or taken home by staff, and a few DeLorean parts were still there.
