Greg, Penetrating fluid will not adversely affect the transmission in any way. I wouldn't suggest that you attempt to seal the boot. Although this sounds like a good idea it falls in the same category as the epoxy frame coating. There is a good chance that sometime in the future water will find its way into the boot. The result would be accelerated corrosion of the switch electrical connectors. I have never replaced this before so I'm looking for some tips. Mine seems to be rusted on there pretty good and I'm having difficulty getting it off. If I use a rust penetrator and let it sit for awhile would it hurt anything on the transmission? Also, there is a rubber boot that fits over the switch - mine is in good condition considering the age but should I also seal the boot with something else to prevent water from getting in? Thanks!
