Aha! - they're called screw gears. Very inefficient and extremely prone to failure if not kept lubricated.... Why has nobody redesigned the angle drive to use bevel gears? They'd be much more tolerant and reliableIt's actually two gears, both with 45 degree teeth, that's why you can rotate it "the otherway round" too; if it was a pure worm gear it would be impossibble to drive the spindle-cable by turning on the output cable.
I have a feeling that screw gears do not work unless the ratio's 1:1 but I am not sureI can't find the old drive here, so I can't check the ratio, but I don't think it's 1:1...
