There are several ways to try to decide if the mileage on the odometer is close to accurate. If the speedometer is not working then of course the mileage is suspect. The same goes if you see a lot of new speedo parts like an angle drive, lower cable, or support bracket. This would mean it was broken and recently fixed. At 4,800 miles the car should stilll have the origional NCT tires on it. If it does you can measure the remaining tread. It should be no less than 8/32 for that mileage. You can look at the Lambda counter. It should not read more than 16. Look at the interior and the pedals. If there is a lot of wear than that should make you suspicious. Get the vin # and call the nearest Delorean vender. He can tell you if any parts or service work was done and if service work was done they usually record the mileage. See if there are ANY repair bills or work tickets from anyone with the car. They should have the mileage when work was done. Look at the title. Try a title search for previous titles on the car and the recorded mileage at the times of sale. In the end don't overpay for a "low mileage" car. What matters more is condition and how it was taken care of. If it was sitting for 15 years figure doing a complete fuel system and a complete brake system and clutch. Also figure on recharging the A/C, the cooling system, tires, recalls, updates, struts, battery, and tune-up. To make the car roadable and RELIABLE, if you do it yourself, can cost between $5,000 to $7,000. Cosmetic things like headliners, repainting the facias, leather seats, carpets, cracked binnacle, missing or broken trim will raise the cost even more. Before you buy the car budget these additional costs plus any tools you may need and a place to work on it.
