He actually thought he was helping John's case because he believed that the tape plainly showed that John was entrapped by the FBI. Larry Flynt went to court over this because he would not tell the judge at the time who provided him with the tape. Larry also provided the tape to 60 minutes and to a reporter for the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles. When 60 minutes aired the tape on tv, John's judge delayed the trial a year because of adverse effects that the publicity would have on it. Larry never actually gave the tapes to the prosecution or the defense.
