A gas stut works best where in its resting state (ie compressed), the
rod end is pointing downwards. This is because the insides contain fluid
to lubricate the seal
Unfortunately, the DeLorean's strut is horizontal in its resting state
which is why they have a limited lifespan - the top of the seal dries
out. You can increase the life by keeping the barrel towards the door
and the rod towards the body, and also swap L and R struts every 2
months or so.

I have just recently noticed this minor detail. My car has the door
struts installed with the thinner rod part attached to the actual
door, while many other cars I see have it attached to the door opening
area. Which way is recommended?
