NOx testing is a new one on me. Is Akron non compliant for NOx.
Personally, I would go to a different testing station. I would more
likely think their equipment is calibrated wrong rather than your car
not running properly.
When US automakers first complied with this standard they lowered
compression to reduce peak combustion temperatures. They also
recirculated some exhaust gases to again lower combustion rate and
efficiency.
This lowered NOx from 2.gm/mile to 1 gm/mile.
Retarding the timing (if the computer doesn't adjust for this) would
help some because the mixture would have less time to burn.
I would also try some high octane fuel and octane additive because they
will slow down the combustion process and reduce peak temperatures.
