Before you go jumping to conclusions you might want to pull the valve covers and try a valve adjustment. It isn't that difficult to do. Unless the engine was overheated or the oil wasn't changed regularly you shouldn't have anything too serious. In any case you will know as soon as you pull the valve covers by the amount of gunk you find! Ideally you should not see much but if you do then you might have a lot of work. Depending on the mileage that the car has you might need to replace the O2 sensor but in any case before you start get a set of gaskets for the valve covers. If it's really gunked up then after you reassemble buy a can of engine flush, run the motor for a while (according the the instructions on the engine flush) and then change the oil and filter.
