Have you checked fuse number 10? It is a fuse socket with a history of meltdown. That fuse also runs blower speeds one and two. You didn't mention if those blower speeds worked. If that is not it I would check the mode switch connections and then the mode switch itself. You're on the right track it sounds like - electrical, not mechanical.
