That sounds like a poor excuse. As is, there's nothing preventing a spider from coming along a picking up the email addresses anyway. Just because they're not on the homepage doesn't mean a spider-bot can't find them. If he's truly concerned about members getting spam, he should set up a contact form using a drop down menu where you can select the board member the email should go to.
