To answer your question Nick is the stock fuel pump basically sucks. The rubber that surrounds the pump deteriorates and if the boot that covers it is not seated properly will leak water and that's when you find the pump sitting in. That's what happened to me when I found it, I didn't do it, that's how it was when I bought it. But anyways, I think that if you have an external fuel pump it is easier to do the maint on it and you don't have to worry about the very expensive rubber seal/boot/cover. I think that's the route I am going, I just though maybe someone out there already did that and I wouldn't have to do all that research. As soon as I am finished I will be posting pics. I already have some good ideas.
