Could you be a bit more specific: Does noise vary with engine RPM's? Does noise change as engine temperature changes? Engine noises can be "heard" somewhere other than their source -- use a piece of hose like a stethoscope (WATCH THOSE BELTS & PULLEYS!) to pinpoint exactly where it's coming from. Don't be afraid to second guess your dash gauges. They help, but they're not the last word in diagnostic tools.
