As the engine ages normal wear and component replacements will alter the tolerances the factory adjustment was set at. The factory setting is only good for the first 35 to 50k miles. Because the K-Jetronic system is a mechanical system adjustments must be made from time to time to compensate for tolerance changes. The L-Jetronic and later Bosch systems have electronic sensors the adjust the CO mixture as the engine ages. I do, however, agree that the CO mixture adjustment should not be altered unless it is absolutely necessary.
