You really should lock the gas cap or replace it with a non-locking cap. The lock mechanism is what tightens the cap to the filler neck. Another place to look for leaks is to remove the access panel underneath the spare tire. This will expose the top of the fuel tank where the fuel pump and the sending unit are installed. Examine the gaskets around the fuel pump and the sender for checking or leaks. You can also examine the filler hoses and vent hose for leaks. But now when the weather is hot, I tent to really smell it when I pull off the highway and stop a light or something. I'm almost positive it is coming in through the AC vents.
