Since you did get air moving out of the defrost position, then it might not be the mode switch, like it was for me. What I did for heat until I got my new mode switch was disconnect the vacuum line to the hot water valve. This guy sits at the front of the engine on the rightish side. When the mode switch is on Max AC the switch applies vacuum to this unit and he closes the valve and does not allow hot air to go to the heater unit in the dash.
