There is a Federal Statute dealing with Odometers. It is at 49 USC Sections 32701 et seq. Technically, changing the milage reading, even with no intent to defraud, is a violation. You may not "disconnect, reset, alter, or have disconnected, reset, or altered, an odeometer of a motor vehicle intending to change the milage registered by the odometer." (section 32703) So even if you are changing the reading to be CORRECT, you are technically violating the statute.

When I get my Dakota Digital dash, I'm going to make the milage show what
the OEM odometer says. If I'm not very accurate about it, would that be a
crime?
