Robert, This problem is common and is a result of corrosion and heat distortion in the bulb socket. The distortion causes the bulb contacts to miss-align with the socket contacts causing erratic or intermittent lamp operation. If the problem is not severe the socket can be repaired by cleaning the socket contacts with WD-40 or other penetrant. Severely distorted or corroded sockets will need to be replaced.
