If you have the original window regulators, the grinding is bad and indicates imminent failure. I, too, have the scratches on one of my windows, but in the tint and not the glass. It was due to the felt strip in the door coming loose and no longer protecting the window. (Part #106129). My driver's side window was scratched when I got the car, but this was due to the window being out of adjustment and the owner continuing to use it. I had that window replaced since scratched glass tends to shatter.
