Torsion Bar Dis-coloration

My torsion bars on the doors (not gas struts) have a slight brown 
discolorations on them. Since these are stainless (right?) it can't
be rust. They look messy and unclean when I when I have the doors open
at car shows and such. QUESTION: would it be safe to mask off the
entire area and spray paint the torsion bars back to a silver color? 
I don'twant to touch them with anything abrasive as that is a major 
no-no but I thought that an non-invasive painting would be o.k. The 
doors work fine and Rob did a T-bar adjust last summer. Does anyone 
else have a similar funky color on their t-bars? Painting them 
shouldn't be a problem, eh?
