[DML] Re: alternator took a vacation

Donald:
I had a very similar problem (sounds identical in fact) with my Trans Am (not my D) and it turned out to be a bad ground from the battery to the frame. I didn't beleive it at first. It doesn't seem to make sense how this could happen once the car is running, but by replacing the negative cable, cleaning the connections and securing everything tightly, I never encountered the problem again.

This may be a cheap fix to try before paying for a new alternator.

Well I finally had the first problem with the Delorean. Being a nice day out for once, I took it out and everything was fine until I tried to start it after turning it off for about 5 minutes at a friends house. The car started up fine and ran for about another 5 minutes until it started to hestitiate then finally nothing....the car just shut down totally, no lights nothing. So , after talking with Rob at PJ Grady's I'm pretty sure the alternator is shot. Does anyone have a good alternative to the $360 delco unit that Rob has, or is anyone selling a used one in good condition? The odd part is that after taking the battery out of the car and charging it at home, the car started up and after a few minutes started to hesitate this time on a large highway on the way home. Hoping not to have to leave my car on the side of the road, I gunned the engine to try to get a little extra power to at least get me to the next exit and all of a sudden the car came "back to life" in that all the electrical items came back to light (especially the dash light with was totally out at first). Has anybody had these problems? -Donald Kazmark vin 3541
