Darren, You're correct about the electrical surge. One thing that is really bad for the computer governor is jump starting the car. If you own an auto and your car won't start because of a dead battery, it is better to either take out the battery and charge it, swap out the battery (until you can charge the one that was in it) or replace it depending on what circumstances that you are in at the time. It is even better to have it towed if necessary than to jump it off. Jumping it off could send spikes to the computer governor and can cause premature failure.
