This is a common complaint, and there are solutions.

The oldest, and most common is a turbo or twin turbo setup. There are a
number of places that sell kits to do this. 

In the past, there have been Chevy and Buick conversions, and more
recently Range Rover and Caddy northstar V8 conversions.

DMC Houston is now offering modified PRV-6 motors for a increase in
performance.

The question of a RX-7 type motor in a DMC has come up before, but I
know of no one who had done this (or tried). With enough money,
anything is possible!

I suggest you check the DMC News archives (Both on the DMC News website,
and egroups website) for more details on all of the above.
