Claude, Yes, there is some truth that the stainless frame was not used due to subfreezing fracturing. The real reason that the stainless frame was dropped was due to cost. The DeLorean was already priced considerably higher than anticipated. The stainless frame would have elevated the price even higher. You mentioned that Lotus should have run extensive testing on the epoxy coating. Unfortunately, when you are under pressure to design, manufacture, and deliver a brand new car from the ground up that luxury is just not possible. In defense of the epoxy coated frames, most of the cars we service here in the south have frames that are still in excellent condition. Imagine what the uncoated frames would have looked like after 18 years of exposure to the elements.
