The assumption that there is a relationship between vehicle speed and total accident deaths is constantly used by police to justify speed enforcement. Studies of accidents and vehicle death by DOT and the national safety council clearly show that most injuries and fatalities happen on local street at interection at speeds less than 40 mph. If police spent more time analyzing accident causes and getting dangerous intersections redesigned and fixed, there would be many less accidents and deaths. In reality, speed enforcement is just another source of revenue to local communities. ALMOST 50% of all fatalities are side impacts, speed has very little to do with this type of accident.
