This isn't entirely true. The DeLorean's doors can be opened enough if it's on its top so that a passenger can escape. This is discussed in Popular Science's evaluation of the car in a 1981 issue. I can't remember the exact month. According to PS, the door and ground act as a lever and fulcrum allowing an average person to open the door to escape in the event of a roll over crash.
