[DML] Re: Clutch Replacement

Your problem is a leaky crankshaft seal (rear main). Apparently this seal
failed prematurely. This has caused oil to leak on to your clutch
components
causing clutch chatter and slippage. This is also the cause of your oil
leak.

There is nothing special about the DeLorean clutch therefore no special
tools are required.
The transmission is built by Renault and is exclusive to the DeLorean. The
service procedure could be performed by a transmission shop but you would
be better off finding a shop that specializes in premium European
automobiles like Porshe, BMW, Volvo, etc. Discuss the procedure with them
and see what they say. Be sure they have access to the workshop manual. A
reasonable price for the clutch job and seal replacement w/o parts should
be $650-$950. If you need additional information you can e-mail me
directly.

10,500 miles on the vehicle. With the exception of replacement of the
struts, I had no problems to speak of, until recently. The Delorean is
starting to leak oil and black fluid (transmission fluid?). The clutch is
starting to chatter and I just noticed last week that the tach RPMs will
increase(on the freeway) without any increase in speed. I can't believe
that I need a new clutch but all the symtoms are there. I store this car in
the garage and only drive it every other month (sometimes).
> As I live in San Diego, California, it is 150 miles to the nearest
Delorean repair shops (i.e. Delorean One). I would prefer to have the
clutch replaced locally as I have to trailer the car (ugh!). Please let me
know if the clutch can be replaced by a transmission repair shop or does it
require special tools or parts. I probably need new seals, etc. I would
appreciate any information I can get on this subject. Is the transmission
Renault? Is is a special clutch? What is a reasonable price for the clutch
replacement? Why did the clutch start slipping in the first place?
