Never, ever, ever trust the factory trunk release cable; it is quite common for them to snap. The factory installed release cable on my D (# 5830) is multi-strand, but that may not be the case for all D's. It is a very simple process to install an emergency backup release cable. All you need to do is get a piece of multi-strand cable approximatelt 24" long. Loop one end around the release arm (where the regular cable is connected; take the other end and loop it around one of the bolts next to the gas filler cap (I suggest the one closest to the windshield). Both of these ends should should have a crimped connector to keep the loops intact. If your regular cable ever fails, simply reach your right hand under the trailing edge of the hood just inboard of the gas cap; grab the cable with all four fingers and pull it sharply toward the left side of the car, while lifting the hood with your left hand. I have had this on my D for many years and it works great. As a matter of fact, I rarely use the inside release, as my backup cable is more conveient to use. As for trunk security, the cable is out of sight and you would have to know how to use it. As for the recommended length of the cable, play with that a little bit until you find one that works for you.
