Ah... figured it out. As it turned out... it wasn't metal at all (hrmm, that's why I'm such a bad welder...). From what I can tell, the only way to get the bushing outta there is to put a pair of channel locks on it and pull like crazy. The array of "tools" that I used to put the new one in was even more interesting.
