Where did you attach the voltmeter?

If you connected it at the same terminals as the gauge they should 
read the same.

The gauge may read different from the measured voltage at another 
point, like right at the battery.  This is due to the "voltage 
dropped" across the wiring and connections when current is flowing. 
E (volts) = I (current) times R (resistance).  Since you say it only 
happens when you are running the fans and the accessories then it 
sounds like a voltage drop caused by a bad wire or connection.  There 
may be some common places to look.   Hopefully some others with more 
specific info on the D will chime in...
