Two of the three metal "runners" inside had come loose from the plastic housing causing a short which made the AC compressor run in all modes. My advice would be to bite the bullet and remove the center console. It's really not that bad. I can remove my console in under 15 minutes now. Once that's out of the way, it's one screw left holding the mode switch to the metal plate and then you can pull it out from behind.
