I was sold on the Cooper Cobras, which had several articles in the
archives, but........ suddenly, the Firestone Indy 500s crept up.
They have a 120 mph speed rating and sound very nice.
In addition, you can match both front and back tire sets which to me
is of critical importance.
Let's here it folks.. Anybody tried them? Any opinions?

Am a little confused how you're planning to fry ECU running exactly
same voltage through it as before... (Assuming coil itself is only
component changed).
Think you misunderstand purpose of ballast resistors. Have absolutely
nothing to do with coil. Are there for ignition module's benefit
alone. Tru high performance ignition systems run full voltage:
Direct quote from Pertronix instruction sheet in my hand right now
(their module):
"Many vehicles came equipped with ballast resistors or resistance
wires [latter is how my Lincolns do it BTW]. To achieve optimum
performance from this ignition system we recommend removal of these
components."
Yes, leaving resistors in place will cut down on ultimate coil output,
but you don't have much choice if retaining original ECU. Final HT
will still be worlds better than stock.
BTW: Bosch spiral core wires are EXACTLY what Pertronix recommends vs
solid core.
Never ceases to amaze me that same owners who criticize DMC cooling
fans, door locks, trailing arm bolts, etc, fail to acknowledge room
for even slightest improvement in ignition...

My car is an Oct 81, it dosn't have the craig radio, but everything

Hi,
I am a newbie. I plan to have a Delorean restored by the? Delorean motor
company in Texas. I understand that the Delorean has two dummy switches (buttons)
in the center cockpit next to the gear shift. My question is this, What can I
add to the Delorean that can be operated by theses switches. Your suggestions
and opinion is greatly appreciated.

A close friend of mine was the publisher of kit car magazine at the time
this was happening. A kit car company was planning on introducing a
Delorean kit for the Fiero. As my friend was also a Delorean owner, he
explained to the kit car manufacturer that the price of DeLoreans was so
cheap, it did not make sense so they discontinued the operation.

He actually thought he was helping John's case because he believed that the
tape plainly showed that John was entrapped by the FBI. Larry Flynt went to
court over this because he would not tell the judge at the time who provided
him with the tape. Larry also provided the tape to 60 minutes and to a
reporter for the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles. When 60 minutes aired the
tape on tv, John's judge delayed the trial a year because of adverse effects
that the publicity would have on it. Larry never actually gave the tapes to
the prosecution or the defense. The movie "The People vs. Larry Flynt"
touches on this subject.

Did you remove circular steel plate pressed into housing (against back
of spindle cable gear)? How difficult was it? Did it stress pot metal
too much?
Apologies for so many questions. I wanted to remove that plate when my
spindle cable comitted suicide (to insert another) but was afraid of
damaging housing. Soldered repair to remaining cable instead.

I'd suggest renting or buying "The People vs. Larry Flynt" It's a good movie
on it's own and includes some of the DeLorean footage, the court battle that

I have had a MSD on 01860 for 2 yrs now, with no
problems. I just replaced the stock coil with the
MSD, and made no other changes (left stock resistor,
and such). Car runs great.

they aren't switches per say but hollow plastic moudlings that look
like the remaining 3 switches... order from driver side to passenger
side is this:

driver window
rear defrost
pass window
blank
Now the 2 blanks can be replaced with either a window switch or a
defroster switch. The window switches are rocker switches (monetarily
on) with 2 sets of contacts and a center rest. The defroster switch is
a spst switch that is on/off manually. You can get them with no
printing from DMCH

in the good old days of points there was a fixed dwell (?) or angle or
whatever you call it to charge up the coil. At higher rpm's there was only
little energy stored and you can imagine what happens when there's not
enough energy to produce a good spark.
Have you ever seen the guys working on the ignition with analyzers /
oszilloskopes ?
There's only a small needle (High voltage/max ignition) that will break down
exactly when the voltage rised so high that a current will flow to GND. When
the gap is wider, the needle is higher...I'm not too good in english to
explain it in every detail. But with an analyzer you can tell exactly what's
wrong with the plugs and the ignition. Take a book and read it. Or don't
believe it and buy that crap.
The last sentence is correct - a too wide gap won't fire....at least not
thru the spark plug ! It will fire somewhere else thru the wire ! And even
with a 10kV coil there may be a much higher voltage ! Believe it or not.
Elvis & 6548...without any cold start ignition problems....
Plug gap has absolutely no bearing on coil output. Is going to build
up HT even if never grounded (that's why you have to be careful
grabbing distributor lead wire even after ignition turned off -- if
last plug never fired YOU'LL become the ground). Gap has everything to
do with flame propogation, and ability of HT to jump (too big gap with
too low voltage won't fire).

DeLorean had another lawyer represent him, previous to the trial. However,
that particular law firm's expertise was in real estate, and not criminal law.
Although they had first pledged to asist JZD, the ultimately could not.
Anywho, since they were his legal council at the time, they were allowed
access to the evidense due to disclosure, hence the DEA tapes of the bust in
room 501, along with all other items. Eventually, Larry Flynt obtained the
tapes from someone working at the office. I say obtained, because he never
paid the source for the tapes like he had initially promised.
Did the tapes, hurt or help DeLorean's defense? Pretty much, they were
neutral to the case. However, at the time, the airing of the tapes really swayed
the publics' opinion on DeLorean to be on his side. It's really been the
negative press from cynical writters, and commedians seeking cheap laughs
that have really moulded the negative opinion that surrounds both the man,
and the car today.

Hi Bill,
Part of your post is misleading, at least the way I read it and I
wanted to clarify something for those following this thread.
A coil dose not store a charge like a capacitor. A large capacitor
can store a charge (almost like a battery) and discharge even with
the device turned off days weeks even months later.
A coil does build up a magnetic field; it is when the power going to
the coil is turned off that the coil creates High voltage by virtue
of the magnetic field collapsing.
This happens because a coil will resist an instantaneous change in
current and when the current flow is stopped, the magnetic field
collapses and tries to maintain current flow.
The net result is that a voltage (a high voltage) is produced.
Once the power is turned off to the coil and the field has collapsed
(happens instantaneous for the purposes we are talking about, the
coil is harmless (unlike a capacitor).
Another thumb rule for sparking and arcing. 10,000 volts will jump
about 1 inch at normal atmospheric pressure. The one inch rule has
many variables and inside the combustion chamber of an engine has
very little to do with what happens outside at atmospheric pressure
but I thought it was an interesting bit of trivia.
One other thing and I'm not picking on you if it is a typo. When
you
refer to HT are you referring to HV for high voltage?
If not pleas let me know what HT is.

Subject: Cigaret fuse
My clock stopped working a few weeks ago, and when I
needed to use the cigaret lighter it wasn't working either.
Is it just the fuse that had gone? if so where is it located?
I also have noticed some noises when turning. Whenever
I make a hard left turn there is a loud squealing sound that
comes from the right front. And when I make a slow turn I
also can hear a slow tapping sound that comes from the
right rear.
Anyone have any ideas?
