List
Due to a fire, I have to replace most of the engine compartment
plumbing. A/C, water, vacuum and fuel lines. I need drawings or
schematics. Do any of the venders sell the plumbing schematics?
Because the tubing was distroyed, I can not trace where everything
came from or went. With burnt wiring you can figure it out, but not
with rubber. I've emailed a "D" vender that says some items are avail.

This list is obviously the opinion of the author of the article. The
Delorean and the Mercedes ML55 AMG don't belong anywhere near this list. The
other 3 vehicles are very similar to each other, in that they are small suv
type vehicles that are very low on horsepower and were meant to be
economical to buy and own. Unfortunately, UK publications over the years
have not been very favorable to the Delorean. And yes, even though the Yugo
does have it's fans, it would be much more appropriate on this specific
list.

If I'm not mistaken, none other than Malcom Bricklin is responsible
for importing Yugo's to US...
DeLo can be called everything EXCEPT mature product line. Only a
couple of prototypes built before production (by novice factory
employees). We're all basically driving around in glorified
prototypes. Wonder isn't that car has a flaws (let's be honest: it
does). Wonder is it isn't so riddled with them as to be unusable.
Look at it another way: at least 75% of production is still on the
road 25 years later. Few other mass produced autos (8000+ units in 2+
years qualifies) can make such a claim.
Another perspective: car is steeped in history. Has instant
recognition among majority of public. Yet remains priced within grasp
of ordinary owner, not only original purchase but ongoing maintenance.
Car WAS a financial dud, of course. But so was the Concorde (somehow
it exited to much better press...)

Consider the source. Lots of our friends in the UK still have quite a bit of
resentment for our Marquee. They feel they were swindled by John Z to this
day. You can't expect much else from a British publication. (This will
always be a sore spot for them) We will just have to depend on our

them straight over there.

I agree that too many "opinions" make it into print as "fact." In the
US we do not teach people to question whether a statement is an
"opinion" or a "fact" based on statistical sampling, scientific method
or a measurement against and established (and hopefully meaningful)
standard.
This fact has lead to the Supreme court to issue the "Douber" rule
regarding "opinions" and "experts." Too bad the media doesn't follow
the same test. As a reporter state to me once
"we are not in the business to tell the truth, but to sell newspapers!"

If anyone in the midwest area is looking for a great
weekend trip for 04 let me make a suggestion.
Somerset, Kentucky is a small rural town in south
central Kentucky. Located just north of beautiful Lake
Cumberland. On the last Saturday of each month April -
October they host the Somernites Cruise. Yeah I know
every litle town has a cruise in, but this one has
taken on a life of it's own. Last Saturday there were
980 cars in attendance (record is 1070)some from as
far as 350 miles away. The number of spectators was
unbelievable. The event is a weekend long with burnout
contests, Saturday morning open access to a nearby
dragstrip and the climax each month all cars line up
and cruise out of town onto the local highway. You can
set in the town square and watch all 980 cruise by.
There was a raffle for a restored 66 Mustang and lots
of door prizes. Every car is digitally photographed as
you enter the square and you can purchase the photo
with a background of your choice. My Delorean looked
great with lightning bolts crashing around it.
There were two Deloreans there and belive me the
crowd flocked to see them. We parked side by side,
doors up and it was a impressive sight. Horsepower TV
filmed four hours of tape to be seen in Jan 04. Check

I have a digital dash in my '83 Tbird and there are a few things that
irk me about it:
It washes out in direct sunlight. Despite the fact that Ford uses a
light sensor that automatically brightens the display in brighter
ambient conditions, it WILL wash out.
It's slow to respond. (Probably less of a common with modern hardware.)
And because it doesn't use a bar or any kind of sweeping graphic, you
can't instantly tell how fast you're really accelerating (whereas with
an analog gauge, you can kind of gauge the speed of the speedometer
needle and make an estimate of your acceleration.)
All of that in combination with the fact that you have to turn the car
on to see how much fuel you have, I'm not really a big fan of the
digital instrumentation. It is kind of cool, I'll give it that, and if
I was going to customize a car for show or something like that, I'd
definitely make an effort to install one, but analog needles seem much
more efficient and "sporty" in the long run.

Hey group,
My new DeLorean has some things that are aggrevating me. First is the throttle will stick at about 1400 rpm's after it's been driven. I checked the engine compartment, and the throttle arm isn't returning all the way. The spring on the throttle spool is on the second notch already, so what do if I need more tension, buy a new spring?
Secondly, my locks don't always unlock together like they should. The car has a Lockzilla... what should I do? Thanks everyone in advance!

Andrew,
As far as I know, VIN 10115 had the digital dash removed. I
think it was recently up on ebay if it is not still there. I was
emailed by several people in different countries regarding this unit
and the questions they had about it's installation and operation.
Ben Boatright had installed it himself and Louie inherited it with his
car. VIN 16816 is my car and I've had it in there for two years now
with no problems and I would never go back to the analog gauges.
I always know my exact speed because the number is there. I
don't have to guess within 5 MPH. Just a quick glance at the gauge
panel is all it takes, until I install the prototype HUD. As far as
trends, that's a personal opinion. I watch my temperature gauge more
often in the 115+ degree summers and know exactly what I run at.
Instead of thinking I know where a needle is pointing I can tell you
what degree Farenheight my car runs at, when the fans (should and do)
come on, when they cycle off, and even have it set to blink when I
feel it's getting dangerous and a possible overheat situation could
occur. Again, you cannot do that with analog gauges.
How can you check your analog gauges without looking away from
the road? You said, "People prefer to be able to tell things like
engine speed and vehicle speed to a first approximation without having
to look away from the road. Digital gauges make this pretty
difficult." The HUD is the only way I know of that allows you to keep
your eye on the road, and every automotive HUD I know of out there
displays digital speed, not an analog needle on a numerical
background. Why not take out a DeLorean with a digital gauge package
and try it for yourself before putting them down with inaccurate
comments? I read your post a few times wondering where you got your
information before I realized it was just an opinion-and an unfounded
one at that since you've not driven my car.
If you're going to Pigeon Forge or you are in AZ anytime before
then, look me up. We'll go for a drive and then you can truly decide
which you like better. I agree, digital is not the way to go for
everyone, but it's personal preference that counts.

I am fairly certain that Ben was not asking anyone's opinion
about where to purchase a car, just about shipping. Do you know what
he paid for it, if he got a good deal even with $845 in shipping? He
never said whether or not he's seen the car-that was never an issue,
yet you commented on it anyway. He never stated how much he paid for
it either.
How are you certain that the car is a northern car? I ask these
questions because I know of the car in question. In fact, up until
2000 I believe it was in FL. Now it is sitting at Rob Grady's shop
ready for the work Ben needs done before bringing it out to AZ. Rob
has been very good to our club with his support and I understand why
Ben chose Rob to do the work his car needs. Rob had a lot of practice
setting my car up for hot weather and we've done some good telephone
R&D since. I think if you are going to buy a DeLorean, P.J. Grady's
is as good a place as any to start, hence why Ben needs to ship it
from NY to AZ. I also trust Rob implicitly because of my experience
with him and his people. I have never known him to mislead a customer
in any way. My car and the 2002 DeLoreancarshow.com trophy it earned
are a testament to this.
I bought both of my DeLoreans off of ebay and flew out to see
both of them before the purchase. I agree, you should never buy a car
sight unseen unless it's a parts car at a fair value, and even then
you run the risk of being ripped off, but it is really all about trust
and what you are willing to part with or lose outright. I shipped
both of my newly purchased DeLoreans to Rob Grady upon purchase and I
don't regret this move for one minute. I shipped my show car from the
east coast to AZ after I moved. There was no way I was going to leave
it out there and possibly sell it, only to buy one in AZ because it
was closer. Your proposed logic doesn't make any sense to me.
Wow, I must really be in a bad mood. In an earlier post I took
the "Devil's Advocate" position on digital gauges, and now I'm doing
the same with you on shipping. I'm usually not this argumentative,
especially with a fellow enthusiast.

Guilty. When I picked the car up, it was in "running" condition, but had been
sitting between a row of wrecked parts cars, and a dumpster for several
months, at least. So along for the journey home came a few daddy long legs,
and a few black widows (which naturally left the noisy garage, but settled in
doorways, and along the cinderblock walls).
The infestation happened at my parents old house, but wasn't really that bad
inside the home. Fortunetly, fire regulations stated that an attached garage
needed to be seperated with heavy insulation from the main dwelling, and the
garage door was a firedoor, with thick insulation. Plus, an alley cat from your
local shelter can be a cheap, yet reliable source of non-toxic, efficient pest
control. :)
I didn't need to call in a pest control guy, but I did have to soak the windows,
doorways, eves, vents, foundation, walls, and the utility vaults out in the
sidewalk with diazanon. Followed up with regular treatments of Ortho home
pest control (which actually gave the best results of all). And eventually, all of
the pests were gone, and even ones that I didn't know about, down in the
vaults. And as a positive, motivation to work on my car forced me to overcome
my fear of spiders! Now they're just a nusance.
More importantly, what I discovered scanning over many car restoration sites,
and thumbing thru books on the subject, not a one ever mentions "delousing"
a car as part of preperation for the restoration process. I guess that no one
ever thinks of that, or perhaps I was some sort of a pioneer. Although I have
heard stories about people getting bitten, or stung by insects at junkyards.
Anywho, spiders can, and will hang out anywhere on the car, but there seem
to be 5 spots on the DeLorean that they especially love to dwell.
1. Front Cavity.
Above the chassis, below the pontoon, and around the suspension, this is a
haven for spiders to dine on any insects that can easily crawl, hop, or fly in.
1. Front Striker Pins.
You don't realize it, but when you close the door, a nice little cavern is formed,
and I've caught a few spiders handing out here, that have built fresh nests
over the weekend.
3. Accumulator Niche.
If's a small spot, but it also streches the length of the chassis. Perfect for
reclusive spiders, and the like, to lay nests.
4. Rear Cavity.
Below the underbody, around the chassis, and above the Trailing Arm
Shields. Short of the clogged intake below the windscreen, this was THE most
filthy area of the car! Cobwebs, old egg sacks, spider/insect corpses, and a
pile of decomposed leaves tangled in the mess.
5. Rear Pontoons.
A double whammy here. Before, the other places have mostly been only
accessable to spiders, and crawling/hopping incects. In the pontoons though,
the air intakes allow easy access for flying pests. When my power antenna
conked out, and I pulled the carbon canister, I discovered an old wasp nest
slightly smaller than my fist. Along with more cobwebs, and eucalyptus
leaves. So if you have a car which just sits outside in the warmer months of
the year, you still need to be careful about other types of pests, than just
spiders and mice.
I don't know about what kinds of pesticides, or alternative repellants to spray
to keep all of the creatures away. But your best bet may be to simply seal off
the car entirely. A Carcoon seems like it would do the job, but I don't know
how well it can seal out spiders, and keep rodents from chewing on it.
Otherwise, keeping the noise/traffic up in the garage (if possible), regular
spraying, and dropping some D-Con bait traps should keep things pretty
clean.

Subject: Ignition system failure
I can't catch a break.
As I was driving home from DC yesterday, I decided I wouldn't -quite-
have enough fuel to make it home. I was very close to my wife's
office so I pulled in next to her. I grabbed my gas can, and used her
car to find a station to fill the can. I drove back, put the gas in
my tank and tried to start the car.
The engine cranked but didn't even try to catch. I knew almost
immediately why. I put my test spark plug in a wire and I had NO
spark. None. Zero.
I have:
Checked #1 fuse. Good. (replaced it anyway, no change)
Checked RPM relay. Good.
Bypassed RPM relay anyway. Good.
Bypassed ballast resistor. Still no spark.
Verified voltage to the coil IS present.
Verified main coil wire is tight on distributor and coil.
Cap, rotor, plugs, and coil are all brand-new.
I suspect the pick up coil is bad or the ignition ECU is bad. Why?
Because:
1. Voltage is present to the coil.
2. The RPM relay functions and it takes pulses from the coil to make
the relay function. The pulses ride the white/slate wire. If the coil
wasn't firing, the relay wouldn't close. This means spark is going to
the distributor and is NOT coming out on the cylinder plug wires.
Any other theories, tests or confirmations are welcome. I'm in a real
bind here folks.
