I installed the door launcher kit last year, and let me say it was one of the
best investments I have made. The install is simple for the most part, if
someone has decent electrical/mechanical know-how it goes in without to much
trouble, and the results are great. The launchers add to the overall appeal of
the car, and I haven't had any troubles or regrets.

I have an original ASI radio for sale el cheapo if anyone wants it.
It doesnt play tapes anymore, or actually it does but you can barely
hear the music through all the static noise, probably needs a new
head or something. But the AM/FM works fine and all original wires
are still attached and not cut.
I also want to sell my stock Bosch ignition coil. I bought it a few
months ago but i want to upgrade to an MSD. The coil is in great
condition with about 2500 miles on it.

I know that some folks and parts vendors keep track of the expected
lifespan of the various parts on our cars, and since my daily driver
has more miles on it than most I thought I'd update the group on
wear-related component failures.
My rear wheel bearings are finally kaput. I got 160,000 miles out of
the originals. I live in a wet climate, but my hubs have never been
dunked/submerged. Because my front bearings were replaced before
they wore out (I rebuilt the front suspension years ago and again
more recently, and replaced the bearings both times while I had it
all apart anyway), I don't know what the longevity of the front
bearings are. 160K out of the rear bearings seems pretty good to me.

Subject: Inertia switch failure
My daily driver car experienced an inertia switch failure the other
day. I was surprised at the condition of the failed inertia switch
when I removed it -- it had clearly experienced overheating and was
visibly deformed and melted in places. I presume that over time the
electrical contacts within the unit degraded, resulting in some
resistance though the unit and associated I^2 * R heating.
Because it's in a location that is easy to overlook, you might
consider examining yours the next time you're doing periodic
maintenance to verify that yours is not showing any signs of heating.
Mine had 160,000 miles on it.

I too am eager to see what John Z. had in the works... The only pics
I've seen other than the production car and its prototypes are of the
bus (DMC-80). OF course I heard about the DMC-24, and future updates,

Just a thought: Calling the first car "The Delorean" in ads, etc, and
having the company named Delorean Motor Car, does anyone else find
this odd, especially thinking about future models at that time?

Well looks like my original hoses are finally
leaking. Minor but still so. Ive ordered the
complete hose kit from delorean today and may be doing
this project next week, for all of you how to loving
folk.
Heres the issue. (up for debate)
1. Should I run that crap removing cleaning stuff in
the cooling system to get the garbage out.
2. If so, should I do it with the old hoses, flush it
and drain it and then put the new hoses on.
3. Or first put the new hoses on and then flush the
system with the cleaning substance.
i know this is trivial, i just wanted everyones take.
PS. if you are in agreement with using this stuff what
brand do you recommend.
should you flush it with distilled water for the whole
processs, or use the ol garden hose for the flushing
and then give it a once through with distilled before
refilling.
obviously for the refilling ill used distilled only.

is what appears to be a draft of a "Long Range Product Plan" dated June
1981. This includes details (but no illustrations) of planned revisions for
the 1984 DeLorean, as well as a "Product Profile" of the sedan, referred to

I would not run ANY flush agent through the system, period. If you
fell the need to flush, take the block drains out and flush with
clean water. You are asking for trouble and possible internal leaks,
not to mention a water pump seal failure by using a flushing agent.

HELP! Won't start jumped the rpm relay and fuel pump runs but does not sound like it should. It ran before I DISCONNECTED THE FUEL DIST. EVERYTHING IS ON IN THE CORRECT ORDER as far as hoses and vacuum lines fuse is good as well as inertia switch but only cranks. Also there is fuel from the CPR to the fuel dist. It's got to be something I did ???? it's starts to turn over with starting fluid.

Someone famous once said "I don't care what they say about me as long
as they spell my name right" or words to that effect. The point is
that the publicity is the main thing. As upsetting as this eposode may
be to some it WILL generate interest in Deloreans in general and that
is a good thing. In the long run people will forget the details and
just remember that there was a Delorean hovercraft on the show. You
have to remember that this show is purely for entertainment purposes
and to do that they do whatever they think will get them the highest
ratings and viewer attendance. From all this controversy I think they
succeded!

That certainly is putting it lightly...
Myself, I'm not happy at all with the Monster Garage episode, as
anyone could probably have guessed, if they've ever read my thoughts
on parting out a car. Let alone destroying one on purpose. But, I was
hesitant to post. As I imagined, many other people here do feel the
same, and did express their own opinions and thoughts. And I didn't
want to include a "me too" posting. And, I figured that you yourself
would post, and I first wanted to get your thoughts, and opinions on
the events recorded on the show, Rich. But there is somthing else here
that no one else has mentioned, and well get to that in a sec.
It's interesting that this show started a small debate about modifying
cars, and I'd like to touch on that right now. I have to draw the
line, and say that customizing, and this show are FAR from each other;
they're two totally different, and completely unrelated subjects.
Customization means simply changing, or modifying the cosmetics, and
certain mechanical functions, that typicly cover vehicle accessories
(non-drivetrain, nor electrical wiring) of a vehicle, to an extent of
where the base fuction remains the same. While personal "tastes" may
play a roll in what we consider appropriate, and what is not, that
doesn't change the fact that the car is still a DeLorean, although,
not a "stock" one. Modifying however, would go so far as to include
changes to mechanical operation (i.e. engine/transaxle swap), yet the
function of the vehicle still remains the same, and it is still the
same vehicle as when it started, in as the vehicle is still
roadworthy, per DOT standards. Anything else would have to be
considered an Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) or a "kit car" that is simply
based off of a DeLorean.
Now with that out of the way, let's move on.
As far as Monster Garage goes, I have never been a fan. I don't like
the show. There are many cars out there that I am neutral about, some
I dislike, and others that are flat out POS's to me, that I would
never consider owning. However, that doesn't mean that I'm ok with
someone destroying them on TV. (even H.B. Halicki films make me
cringe). So to see another DeLorean go thru this, was honestly sickening.
Believe me, I can understand how you can take recorded footage for a
show, and edit things together to represent how events have occured,
to get the reaction that you want. From the show itself, yes, it is
indeed quite evident that all of you worked quite hard, and put forth
a great effort. Plus, the in the interview that you gave the link to,
it really does clarify things, such as the main difficulty of not
having the hovercraft expert that you were really relying on to give a
good amount of guidance on the project.
I understand that the show is based upon "Shock Value" to get a
reaction from the audience. That is after all what the intent to keep
people watching. But this show is quite different from some of the
others that I've seen/heard of. In this episode, we don't just have
annonymous people trashing, and destroying a car. We have DeLorean
people doing it. To me, the car was not just dismantled and cut. The
vehicle was not respected at all, and I don't mean by the comments
Jessie, or the the narrator made. The same exact people that we expect
to help keep the marque alive, to protect our vehicles destroyed one
of our own. It wasn't enough that the car had to be ripped apart, but
once the panels were removed, they we're purposefully smashed to do
even further damage. Now if we have people who represent a service
center, a possible future service center, and a DeLorean owner, what
does that say about the DeLorean? Are our cars really that terrible
that even the people whom are supposed to care the most about
preserving them view them as disposable, and don't care if they're
destroyed? Never mind value, but respect alone. What kind of message
does this send to others who are not involved in DeLoreans about how
even those most involved feel about their cars?
Another aspect is how you described that the destruction of the car,
and the parts involved are inconsequential, since after all, they're
all in good supply. That really hasn't been a concern of anyone here,
but it does raise a question for me. Many people on the list have said
that if it is not economicly feasable to restore a car, that we should
simply part it out, that other's could benefit from it. However, from
your description, and maybe I'm wrong here, but you were able to take
parts, and actually assemble a car which was then restorable, but
decided to destroy it? How does that not mean that no DeLoreans were
destroyed in the process?
Now I'm not attacking you, Rich, nor anyone else on the show. But I've
ALWAYS been a firm supporter of buying parts from DeLorean venders so
that we can keep up our support network, and continue with parts
development. But by supporting venders, is this what we can expect?
Venders who we support, using profits from our purchases to destroy
the same cars they're supposed to be helping, for half-rate shows on
cable TV?
Exposure for our cars, and owners is good. But this show has really
set things back. Even I myself have recived a few negative comments
from coworkers, and elsewhere. No one whom I've encountered has
actually liked the show, and the main question that I get is why the
hell would you guys want to do that to a DeLorean in the first place?
Which not even I can answer...
It doesn't matter that shows like this come along "infrequently". This
is one opprotunity for "exposure" that should have been passed up. And
like I say, I'm not posting to try and attack, but what possible
benefit was there to gain by taking on this "project"? And more
importantly, what was there to loose by simply declining for a
DeLorean not to participate?

I just got to see the episode of Monster Garage. It was a cross
between Survivor and Junk Yard Wars. It appears that JJ wanted to pick
a fight with one of the team members and Rick was the unlucky one.
(BTW we saw his car with 2 engines this weekend and it is an awesome
project.) I believe that the hovercraft was destined to fail, they
MUST have planned way in advance that it was to be crushed. You don't
just call the Navy and have them crush a car on short notice! The show
sacrificed TWO Deloreans but what was destroyed seemed to be mostly
the fiberglass underbodies and some damaged panels. Most of the
interior parts and drivetrain where removed so those cars will live on
in other Deloreans. I wouldn't get too worked up over this, it seems
like Don didn't seem to upset. I just hope he hasn't hurt his
reputation being involved with the likes of JJ. I am sure he is a much

If it ran before you touched the fuel dist then I would go over
EVERYTHING you did to it. Have someone else go over it too, they may
see something out-of-place that you keep missing. If the fuel pump
sounds funny maybe you hooked the hoses up wrong and now the fuel
pressure is not right so the pump is either working too hard or not
hard enough. Mixing up the hoses can cause this, excess fuel pressure
is supposed to get dumped back (returned) to the fuel tank.

EVERYTHING IS ON IN THE CORRECT ORDER as far as hoses and vacuum lines
fuse is good as well as inertia switch but only cranks. Also there
is fuel from the CPR to the fuel dist. It's got to be something I did
???? it's starts to turn over with starting fluid.

Subject: Fall Tour this past Weekend
I am not going to comment now on the Fall Tour which was GREAT. The
purpose of this post is to comment on the condition of several of the
cars. In most of the cases the problems were electrical and 1 was a
blown exhaust flange gasket. The electrical problems were:
Melt-down in the cooling fan circuit
Blower motor inoperative
Missing ground on left tail lights
Low battery causing hard start
On the cooling fan melt-down, this was a very new owner who wasn't
familiar with the car at all. He had a bypass wire which was not
installed right (only 1 fan ran) and then it fell out. After
reinstalling correctly (thanks to Bill R) the circuit breaker cycled
and a wire and connector had melted. Bill replaced the connecter and
jumpered the circuit breaker (the bypass had fuses).
We didn't troubleshoot the blower motor but the suspected cause is
either a bad circuit breaker, bad motor, or a loose/burnt wire. (We
heard the 3-speed and 4-speed relays click).
Jumped the dead "D" and it seemed OK
The tail lights will be fixed when the owner gets home.
The main purpose in explaining these things is to get people on the
list to go over their cars ESPECIALLY if you are going on a long
trip. It is too easy to ignore the fuse-relay area until you smell
something burning or something won't work. If your battery is over 5
years old get a new one. The fan fail bypass is only meant to be a
TEMPORORY repair. Either get a Fanzilla or upgrade the fan fail relay
but don't think the bypass is OK to leave in there. The exhaust leak
is just unforseeable, in fact it seems to be rare, but it can happen.
All in all the tour worked out great unless we hear that someone had
trouble on the way home. Again, to get the most pleasure out of the
Tour you HAVE to have a family band radio so you can chatter and
follow the along with the Tour. Bring an extra one for the ones that
forget and have extra batteries.

Well....I just got home from the Mid-Atlantic Club Fall Foliage tour and
the weekend was nothing short of AWESOME!
I will have pictures and a write up posted on the club web site by end
of the week (hopefully sooner!)
We had a great time the whole weekend, and everyone else seemed to
really enjoy themselves also. Thanks to everyone who attended and
helped make it a memoriable weekend full of fun, laughter, and memories.

Subject: Will there ever be more upgrade paths from DMCH?
I notice James has been participating a bit more regularly in the mailing
list lately, so perhaps he can comment on this, since all we seem to be
getting are rumors.
The 197 horsepower engine was originally stage 1, with stages 2 and 3
promised on the horizon. Then it became stage 2. Then it became stage 3.
The DMCH web page still says it's stage 1 and still promises stage 2 and
3, but it's apparently out of date.
Some people commented about DMCH having a working EFI system that was
worth another 30 or so horsepower, but that it was not financially
feasible. (Considering that EFI systems really aren't that expensive to
put together, I'm curious what else was involved here to make it so
expensive.)
I'm happy with my 197 horsepower engine, but I won't lie... I want more.
James, can you give is any definitive comment on whether or not we're
going to see any future upgrade plans from you guys? Can we please get
some more accurate information than what's on your web page?
I'm tempted to start working on my own EFI system, but I really don't want
to bother if you're going to unveil one the moment I'm done. :-)

Subject: Big Blue Delorean!!
Just for you basketball/Delorean junkies. The
University of Kentucky Basketball team always starts
the season at one minute after midnight on the first
day of NCAA allowed practice. This was last Friday
night or Saturday morning. The theme of this years
practice was "The Future of Kentucky Basketball" as
they begin their second century of play. Coach Tubby
Smith arrived "inside" Memorial Colisuem in a cloud of
smoke driving what else but a Delorean and dressed
like Marty McFly along with equipment manager Bill
Keightly dressed as "Doc Brown".
Strange how a twenty year old car still represents the
future. I never saw a Delorean in the central Kentucky
area until I bought mine. There were two at a small
local crise in Friday night and Tubby is cruising UK
in one. They are everywhere!!

Subject: Toll Window Operation
I am sure this has been covered many times but I
didn't find any real answers in the archives sooo...my
passenger side toll window will not operate. It is up
and plans to stay there. I have voltage at the motor
and can hear a faint click as the switch is operated.
How difficult is replacing the motor. Has anyone found
a source to perform the repair? I am too far from the
real pros to make that a option.
