Subject: Re: One more thing -Monster garage
I'm sure Rich will check in on this, but a couple of things to
remember. The crew (us) has no say in what actually airs. We signed
all that away at the beginning.
People who aren't "into" what you are "into" tend to not worry about
such details. Right now on the monster garage chat list, there's
someone all worried about the fact that they call the Bronco a 1973
instead of a 1979. Like I could tell the difference..
Rich sent them a ton of information on us, the cars, the DMC, D-Rex,
etc. Some of that is undoubtedly what sold the producers on our group
vs someone else. But keep in mind that they taped 15-20 hours of
material over 5 days, and distilled it into about 15 minutes of real
air time. There is a TON of neat stuff still on the cutting room
floor. And some details that would have helped it make more sense.
All in all it was a great experience, and we were most pleasantly
surprised by the amount of DMC content they left in. Initially they
had indicated that NONE of it would show, but when the director saw
all the cars there he got pretty excited about it.
A little more DMC detail - the cars that you see drive up are kind of
an interesting assortment. They included Rich's Buick Turbo car,
Bryan's SS frame (red) car, Marty's mild custom, Eric's wild stereo
car, and my stocker.
Also - Ken promises that we can show a lot of our out-takes and
digital photos at Pigeon Forge.

Subject: idle problem
This problem usually only happens on cold starts. After starting my
81 D the engine races up and down. At an idle in park it sounds like
someone
is pushing up and down on the gas peddel. When you put it in drive it
still happens but not as bad. Sometimes I can rev the motor to around
4000 RPM's a few times and it quits. After the motor warms up a bit
it stops. I know for sure I have a vacaum leak, John Harvey is
putting
together a silicone hose set to replace my old ones. Would a vacaum
leak cause this type of problem? If not, Anyone know what would cause
this?
Thanks

Ok, well, my Delorean has been sitting in a showroom for about a year
and a few months. I took it back recently, and among other things,
the turn signals and hazard lights don't work. I really need to fix
this because I need to drive/sell the car and having no turn signals
is a real problem.

Hi guys. Around all of the fiberglass filler panels
around the door openings, the factory liberally used a
black, silicone-like sealant. Anybody know where to
get this stuff? I can't remember seeing black
silicone at Home Depot and it seems rediculous to use
Black Permatex RTV. Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Once warmed up, your O/2 sensor should put out .1 volts at full lean and .9 to 1.0 volts at full rich.

Usually an O2 sensor is not damaged from an overly rich mixture. When
you finally lean it out it will come back to life. You CAN damage it
by contamination. If you do not use "sensor safe" silicone gasket
sealer you will not only ruin the O2 sensor currently installed but
any replacements you install! There are tests of the Lambda system you
can do to make sure the rest of the system is functional. Refer to
D:04:15 # 5 A.-E. There have also been cases (not on Deloreans) of
using silicone cleaners on the motor and when the motor was running it
was ingested and contaminated the O2 sensor. If you are using a
digital dwell meter to check the Lambda don't trust it. Most can't
read it right. You really need an old analog type with a needle to get
the readings you want. Remember we are dealing with 80's technology so
you have to try to use the test instuments that the people had
available then.

Since I've been told by multiple sources that the ECU almost -never-

I have a 1983, SHOW WINNING, DeLorean for sale. It is a limited edition
(1 of ~100) made for the Canadian Market. It is in excellent shape,
never winter/rain driven, always garaged & covered, and had thousands
($) in upgraded/performance parts. Go to http://dmc.freehosting.net
<http://dmc.freehosting.net/> for pictures and information. Email me
for any additional pictures and information. This car is appraised at
$39,500 CAD and is being offered for $18,000 USD ($25,000 CAD). One
thing DeLorean owners know is, "you get what you pay for". Usually
cheaper priced DeLorean's need LOTS of work. This needs very little. I
am taking a huge loss, but I need to sell the car. Let me know if you
are interested.

I haven't used any gasket sealant due to fear of contamination. I
have used NAPA silicone spray lube on the car at various times. I
don't recall ever directly injecting it into the engine but over 7-9
months, who knows?
I am using Mike Cohee's analog dwell meter. I will refer to the
manual section you've called out.
I was unable to perform any tests or repairs because we got hit with
an unreal storm just as I pulled up in front of my house. Every tree
in the median outside my development was torn down before my eyes
blocking the road. Not saplings either. I then looked at the tree
next to my car, and relocated the car to the middle of the parking
area just in case.
I think little silver cars are good luck or something.

Subject: Re: One more thing - Monster garage
List,
Dave Swingle hit most of the main points about the show and how it is
produced, with very little control of content by the build team.
The producer looks for a theme he would like to "make fit" with the
video footage he ends up with or sometimes they have to make due.
There is not only a lot of video left on the cutting room floor, but
there is footage that is removed by Discovery Channel, after the post
production by the studio, in order to fit commercials into the show.
I suspect that is where our Monster Garage profiles got the axe.
The good news is that we did get some behind the scenes home video
of the making of this monster, so the show is only the beginning.
For example, one of our support team members, Marni Patrick, got some
video footage that the film crew did not get, including the view of
Eric's jump that was aired in the show (note her name in the credits)
and Marni also got some footage of Eric blasting over a huge pile of
aggregate just prior to the jump, but since the time/date stamp was
on that video footage, they probably decided not to use that clip.
The show was just the validation of the time and effort put in by
myself and both the build team and support team. Many people do
not realize that it took over 5 months of countless e-mails, calls
and FedEx packages of propaganda to make this show a reality. Even
after all of that, it took 3 weeks of preparation, a full week of
clean-up and 2 weeks of reviewing the production with the supporting
vendors, not including the actual build week (a week of no sleep).
This was a complete team effort and a complete success.
Another big thanks to Julee for letting Dave build that huge garage
and for putting up with us for a few weeks, before, during and after.
Let me know when you guys are ready to build the next project.
Later,
Rich W.

When my D gets hot it does not like to start. Have replaced the
injectors, fuel dist.,and fuel accumulator. Before the accumulator
was replaced I could fire the cold start injector the car would start
and run. After it was replaced the car ran good for about 3 drive
cycles and now it will only start if I spray a little gas,WD40,ect..
into to the engine while cranking then it will start and run fine.
But this ONLY has to be done after the engine had been runing, never
cold. Thinking the fuel pump intake hose might be the problem. Any
ideas before I have to empty a full tank of gas?

Hi Darren -
If you're an ex-pat Brit who remembers Tiswas, than you'd also
probably appreciate a bit of trivia in the history of my Delorean...
Sylvester McCoy from Tiswas, who later went on to even greater fame
as the Seventh Doctor on Doctor Who, has ridden several times in my D
when in town for some of the celebrity/fan vacation cruise events
that I sometimes run (once, I must sadly admit, when the air
conditioning went out -on a warm May afternoon in Florida!) While
doing promotions for the West Palm Beach, Florida PBS station's
Doctor Who pledge nights, we also used my car for a gag promo that
introduced the in studio celebrity guest, John Levene, who played
Sgt. Benton. In it, he is supposedly dropped off at the TV studio by
The Doctor, the unseen driver of my delorean, which then
dematerializes to the familiar sound of The Doctor's own time
machine, the TARDIS. Quite amusing if you know any background on
both Doctor Who & Back To The Future....

Subject: Re: idle problem
I have fixed several with similar symptoms. In all cases it turns out
to be vacuum leaks. They were in different places and varied in
severity but the underlying cause was air entering the engine that
wasn't measured by the air sensor and the idle system tried to keep up
with it unsuccessfully. You have to look in the more unusual places.
It isn't always a loose or cracked vacuum hose. It can be the "O" ring
seal on the air pipe to the idle motor, hard seals on the fuel
injectors, missing gaskets or "O" rings on the air induction system,
and so on. Make sure the 3 brass screws are seated closed (clockwise)
and the throtle spool is hitting the idle micro and it is working.
Other things just make the symptoms worse like dirty fuel injectors,
old ignition wires, worn spark plugs. Typically when you have a
problem like this you wind up going through a whole tune-up to really
cure it and straighten things out. If your mode switch is hissing that
needs to be fixed. This is a case of where all the vacuum leaks have a
cumulative effect that is to say they add up so that a lot of tiny
leaks make a big problem. On many of the Deloreans you are dealing
with 20 + year old rubber which ages, is subject to heat and shrinks
and cracks. It could take replacing every piece of vacuum hose to fix.
Any piece that is hard, swollen, soft, or worn should be removed and
replaced just like every piece of hose on the cooling system.

Possible control plunger adjustment. Enrich 1/8th turn.

Subject: Re: Still hot start problem
The fuel injector system needs what is called "rest pressure" to
restart when warm-hot. The fuel accumulater is supposed to store that
pressure. To do that it needs to be good, that is to say it should not
leak out the small nipple on the back indicating a blown diapghram
inside. Assuming the accumulater is OK the other 2 things you need to
hold rest pressure is a good check valve on the fuel pump and a good
(non leaking) pressure regulater on the mixture unit. The general
sequence of failure is the accumulater, then the check valve on the
fuel pump and then (rarely) the pressure regulater on the mixture
unit. Pull the small rubber hose off the end of the accumulater and
run the pump. If fuel comes out the nipple of the accumulater replace
it. If fuel doesn't come out then replace the check valve on the fuel
pump. If you have the old style pump with the valve internal to it
then you will have to replace the fuel pump. You should also check to
make sure the control pressure regulater on the left valve cover is
getting power.

really. Even though I'm from the UK I currently live in Atlanta, Ga

hope to go but if someone can help/advise then I'd really appreciate

GE makes Silicone (10 oz caulk gun) in every color of rainbow. Works
excellent in harsh conditions: have used silver on my canoe. Have
sealed a couple of Ford glue in windshields with combo of clear and
something innocuous on finish side. Usually buy at Lowes. Try
searching for online retailer -- have bought less popular ConTact
Paper woodgrains that way (http://doitbest.com/shop/default.asp).
Word of warning: clean off excess while still wet. Clings like super
glue. But does remain flexible and does not shrink.

Jonas, Besides a vacuum leak. Could be a idle speed thermister/sensor in the

If not, Anyone know what would cause
this?
Thanks
