My automatic transmission shifts fine (first, second, third) in D
position but ignores shifter positions 1 and 2 (acts like it's still
in D Also, my backup lights stay on in Park. The shifter does not
seem to be misaligned. In other words, P R N D 2 1 all seem to be
aligned correctly with the shifter. I can't find anything in the
manuals about such a problem.
What am I missing? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

But here is a summary:

Monroe gasmatic shocks (I beleive I'm reading the box correctly that it is
model "59016" GM) on the front wheels and they seem fine. They are about
$20 a pair at any auto store. My prior shocks were shot and very old if
not original. My D has only 6k on it. Its been driven regularly about 20
miles a month.

I used the following on the front. Gabriel VST LT Gas Ryder G63902 off a
Nissan ½ ton pickup 69-81 (requires space washers to fit)
So far... nothing to help me decide what to do. So I haven't yet; I'm still
working other gremlins and watching my alternator closely. It may jump to
the top of the list.
I wonder if I shouldn't replace my 22 year-old cut springs (cut 22 years
ago, too) when I replace my shocks. I probably should. Then I wonder if the
Mid-State DMC club's wouldn't be a little too soft. I want softer more
comfortable, but they might not be the best choice for the roads in my area
where drainage is more important than smoothness. Some driveways have
drastic inclines.
So what I would like to know about _everyone's_ shocks. If you have
experience with multiple types, then post on all and compare!
1. general ride quality
2. pothole handling
3. high speed handling
4. your car lowered or original height

Sounds like an interesting idea. HOWEVER, since most
car shows give an award for the car from the greatest
distance, let me express my pet peeve. In some cases
this award has been given to "Trailer queens" and the
like. IMHO, if you didn't drive it there, you don't
qualify!!!!

Does anyone know of an after market cap that will fit the DeLorean
Brake M/C Reservoir, BUT is a solid single piece? And if so, is it
available @ a regular retail-chain auto parts store?
When I bleed the brake system, I would prefer to use positive pressure
to flush the lines, rather than vaccum. So I'm figuring on building my
own unit, since none are readily available localy, and it's a simple
device anyways.

Hm, I went to an american car show with my D lately
and it was the only stainless steel car there. It also
was the only Delorean 99% of the people had ever seen.
(We have less than 100 here in Germany)
I think I had the most visitors at my car, especially
with the flux capacitor mounted. Always when I looked
at my car from a distance and I didn't have any visitors,
it only took about 10 seconds and there was the next group
putting their greasy fingers on my SS.
Guess what ? I didn't win anything. It had no paint !
A red, really nice Thunderbird got the first prize
and a very custom ugly black I don't know what it was
got the extra prize.
Don't take those car shows too serious, it's just fun
to be there.

I know for me I just want to have fun showing my car at different car
shows, I don't really care about having my car judged or awards. I'm
just finding a lot of shows that won't let me in becouse of the year

If you look at the Mid States shocks, you'll see the fronts are the Gabriels and the rears are the Monroes (although you'll never get any one there to admit it). I have the Monroe Gasmatics off of a 69 Camaro Multi Leaf rear Spring on the rears and the Nissan Gabriels up front, and I've been happy. They are not high performance shocks, but for every day inexpensive shocks they do the job. The rear body roll under hard abrupt cornering is a little excessive. I'm considering Koni Aluminum body Coil Overs for the rear from Summit Racing. Probably one of this winters projects. I'm looking for an upgrade for the front also. Pot holes and rail road tracks give me some bounce. Tire pressures make a big difference. Never run them too high. But with the basic dimensions easily available, there are lots of shocks to choose from. Watch the cross ref for the Monroes on the front. The ones I could find were too long and allowed the lower control arm to contact the frame under full extension. I did not find a Monroe to fit the front.

Good news: Using a cheater bar & wheel chocks I freed the last stuck
nut on the driver's front.
Bad news: The passenger front stripped out totally.
Good news: New otterstat works great. Fans kick on.

Good news: Fixed the shift linkage. Have reverse.
Bad news: Still finding more vacuum leaks. :)
Good news: Took her for the first drive OUTSIDE of the parking lot. On

Mike, My experience has been that yes you can bleed the fluid but you can't
get all the potential goo out of the caliper with out taking it apart and
cleaning it out and refill. Just a comment. Take a look at it on the bottom

Get out your Workshop Manual and got to G:06:02 fig 17. I am guessing
somehow the manual control valve is not connected to the shift
linkage. You will have to drop the pan to see this.

The computer governor could still be the problem, the manual control
valve may have come loose inside the transmission (rare, but
possible) or the multifunction switch locking bracket may have come
loose. The chart on G:04:03 of the Workshop Manual and other pages
in section 4 gives you a pretty good diagnosis. Based on your
comments however, I would say your shifter cable needs adjustment or
the multifunctional switch is loose. On the early cars, like mine,
the 1st gear hold is a hard adjustment to catch and also get all the
other positions correct too. This is because of a somewhat sloppy
shift tower that was later modified which then allowed for a better
adjustment. I adjusted mine so that I basically have to "hold" the
shifter back in 1st gear if I want it to stay there. All other
selector positions are right-on. This setup is fine with me because
I rarely want the 1st gear hold.
You have to be careful with the adjustment. The shift tower notches
and the selector shaft positions have to match. The tower can feel
ok and the cable will still be out of alignment.

Parts manual shows them as M6. Used grade 5's on one of my Lincolns
(5,000 lbs), so 8.8's should be cool. Installed Gutentight (somewhat
imprecise measurement imported from Germany -- good n' tight) with
lock nuts. Wheels haven't fallen off yet.
