Bill I think you missed my question or perhaps I wasn't clear
enough.  I know that the spark is produced when the points, or in the
DMC-12's case, the ignition ECU "opens" the circuit and the magnetic
field collapses...

My questions are:

1)What is casuing the apparently large variation of this primary
induced voltage as seen on the WS, white/slate wire of the coil from
one firing to the next?

2) Why does the tach jump when it sees this extra voltage?

3) Why does this happen only at RPMs less than 1400?

4) Is this normal DMC-12 operation?

5) What can I do to diagnose the problem.

This symptom usually indicates that the capacitor for the vacuum
solenoid is not connected. I don't know why but I have seen many
cars where this is not connected in the wiring harness. Many cars
have the capacitor located on the firewall near the solenoid. It
appears to be connected but when you pull open the harness and
verify it, the red wire of the capacitor is open and is not tapped
into the black/blue (BU) wire of the solenoid as it should be - or
on some cars the capacitor is at the micro switch and has been
disconnected.

Once the capacitor for the vacuum solenoid is connected properly the
Tach is as smooth as silk.

Would someone from the Ireland club please contact me off list at
mark(at)buffalochips.org

I received a communication from someone about a car being purchased from a
San Diego dealer by the Ireland club or someone in it, and I want to pass
the message along but not on the list.

Thanks!

Sonny,
Great idea on buying one for the local library. As owners of a Delorean, we
have an obligation to help spread the word (truths vs erroneous misconceptions)
about our rides. Most of us do this through driving ours and always having to
1. Explain what it is, 2. That it is not powered by a Cleveland engine, 3.
That JZD never went to prison, 4.you can fill in the rest........... So your
idea is just another way we can help society become better educated and maybe
spark an interest in a future owner! So with this said I challenge my fellow
DMCer's to think about buying a copy for your local library, if not your local
library, how about your local high school library? . I promise you that your gift
would be well received. Remember today's youth are tommorrow's owners

I personally think it's great that SSI is being reprinted. It will finally give everyone in the DeLorean community a chance to own this book. Most people either can find or afford one. I personally can't complain about a reprint hurting my investment in my copy... I paid $15 for it at a car show... lol.

What I *DO* have a problem with is DMC-Houston trying to be the sole distributor of the book. It should be available to everyone, everywhere. Let's face it... only people who know a lot about the DeLorean car will know to get the book through DMC-H. If it were available at all bookstores and libraries, it would obviously be available to a much larger audience. The DeLorean saga ended over 20 years ago... the general public could certainly use a refresher on the man and the car. If this book were widely distributed, it would be a great opportunity to help keep our cars alive, and renew public interest. Without new interest in the DeLorean, the car will eventually fade out of public knowledge, and die.

I'm just trying to say, instead of reviving an old book (fine the
way it is) why not put it into a new book..like the gold portfolio
II...why add to a classic book. SSI is rare, but it can be found for
cheap at used book stores.

Everyone at car shows, at least that I've been too, knows he didn't
end up in jail and locked away for years.  Give credit to the people
in the non Delorean world, who read these books.

I do agree that it is a gloomy book.  Most of them are... and I'm
sure it would make a great new novelty book. Many Success!

But the jail, trial,Belfast factory close, as you pointed out, is part
of the history. Part of what JZD went through, like all of us who
struggle in life, did it all for a dream.  There are always
pitfalls.  And I'm glad there is a new light to be added....especally
if its about the current owners!!

I'm glad that there are people out there that care enough that the
cars are still alive and running today.  I am a DMC-12 fan, have been
since 1983, and I too read these books.

If it's the image you're worried about.  You are the DMC owner, you
present the image.  You inform the uninformed.

Gee Charlie, do you think you could at least wait until you've read

On occasion, I have heard reference made to an "auxiliary air valve".

As far apart as I have had my engine, I can't believe I haven't seen
this thing, nor can I find it in any parts lists.

I have finally seen one on Ebay for sale, (looks new too). This thing
doesn't look familiar to me. It looks like it has an electrical plug
on the end as well but I'm not sure.

I must be stupid or something. Can someone please tell me WHERE on
the engine this thing goes, what it does, what symptoms it causes if
it fails, where to get one, and a part number???

Humbly yours,

Rich

Subject: pick up coil replacement...

..was a complete success.

I sent my distributor with the stripped nut to Rob Grady to repair and replace the pick up coil.  He sent it back in record time.  I popped it back in, placing the rotor exactly where it was when I removed it, and bolted down the distributor in exact location that I had marked.  Re-installed everything, hooked up the fuel lines, made a few "final checks" to make sure I didn't forget anything, and the engine fired right up and ran like a top for 10-15 minutes while I warmed it up.  Even WITHOUT setting the timing, the engine seems to be running very smoothly (as good as it was before).  I can rev it up to 4000 RPM and it's steady as a rock.

Thanks to all who helped - I appreciate this community without whom I wouldn't have been able to complete this fun project.  It was a pain at times, sure.. but once everything just fired up and ran, it was a joy.

I do have one more question.  Since I replaced the distributor and rotor in the exact location (or as close as humanly possible), and the car is running very well, should I still go ahead and re-set the timing?  How off can it be, if at all?

Thanks.
