I know there are only so many driver side torsion bars. And of course
the stock of them is out due to it being used more than the passenger
side. I'm curious if the driver side bar would ever be re-made. I
imagine the expense would be high but it is also an item that you pretty
much cant get by without it.

My wife had just the opposite problem a few years back. We had her 75
Bricklin in a local show, and when the announcer was calling out the various
cars in their classes, he remarked that seeing her white car with the doors
up, thought someone had painted a DeLorean white till he looke d closer!

Tony,

The car helped ya but you dug yourself out of the hole! If you speed and
don't look into the mirrors (all of them) that is a major disrespect to
the law! And don't disrespect your car by not looking at the guages
either.

This is a tip for you speedsters...when you get pulled over just be
nice, respectful, curtious, take it like you got caught with the hand in
the cookie jar, geezz, if you are nice enough, admit that you were
speeding or busted that red light/stop sign it will be easier on you and
maybe, just maybe 50% of a time or more you wont get a ticket! And
that's only of your attitude.

Most cops (real street cops) pull you over just to talk to you and
stretch out, see how you doing and if everything is ok, check that
occasional reg, insurance and DL status...you are the one that writes
yourself the ticket with your mouth!, trust me on that one.

I had a gentleman from California ask me few years back " why the F*ck I
pulled him over for?" on the freeway since I was a "city cop!?" and he
only passed me going 85 in 55. Lets just say his BMW was towed...

Keep it safe, watch your rearview mirrors and definitely keep it under
88mph plzz!! Ha ha

First of all I very rarely speed and I in no way endorse it but my
DeLorean isn't my daily driver so I guess I got a little caught-up in
the extremely high fun-coefficient of the car. It was very early just
before rush hour so the traffic was light. Nice and cool out so no AC,
just open windows. Not really sure how fast I was going. Somewhere
between 85 and the top speed of the car. I saw him in the rear view way
back there so I slowed down without pressing the brakes. Instantly he
was on my bumper then the lights went on so I pulled over.

Thanks for the info. The reason that I was curious about the specs on the
factory fans was because I was looking at a replacement aftermarket set. The
problem that I have isn't just a need for new fans, but a new fan cowl as well,
since mine is partially damaged (cracked and chipped).

What I was looking at was a complete 12" dual puller fan assembly that pulls
2500cfm total, @19.5 amps for $195. (FYI, it's 15-1/2''x26-1/4''x4-18'')

Price isn't the determining factor here. Performance is. If the stock set up
works better at cooling, then I will opt for it. Plus I am not fond of fabrication,
and need to make sure that something else would of course fit. But if there is
an alternative that allows for better cooling, and A/C performance, it is
something that I would be quite interested in.

I find that pretty strange, myself.
I have never had anyone exclaim anything other than "Wow, a DeLorean!" or
"Hey, the Back to the Future car!" It seems whenever I mention Bricklins or
anything, they haven't really heard of it. Around here, when people know
about it
being a DeLorean, they sometimes know what a Bricklin is.

When James Espey was in the UK for the Classic Car Show at the NEC (National
Exhibition Centre) in Birmingham last year,
We asked him this very question.

According the James, he CAN get the Torsion Bars re-made.
Both Drivers and Passenger side bars.
(I think he said he needed a minimum order of about 5 or 10)

Price (If I remember correctly) was only a few hundred dollars.
So don't worry about it too much, they are (or will be, ordered to request)
still available.

Thanks,
Robin.

Gary,

Those pictures brought tears to my eyes.  With all the brain power on this
list I don't see why someone can't come up with a torsion bar replacement.

How is the Chevy transmission is holding up because GM sent Delorean a bad batch of
them.
That doesnt look like a Chevy 350.
That doesnt look like a ford 351.
Wow a Ford Delorean.
Wow a Chevy Delorean.
I thought these cars were all given back after the drug bust.
Is this a Bricklin.
Where is the electric motor that opens the doors.
That is a weird looking Helicopter engine (confused with Tucker i assume).
That is a Volvo boat motor huh.
Wow a brushed Aluminum car.
That car will never rust including the frame.
Wow a solid Stainless Steel car.
Too bad your car is so slow because it is so heavy.
My brother bought one brand new back in 1979 after high school.
Why do you have a lift kit on the front of the car, shouldn't it be lower.
And all of the usual BTTF jokes.

I do go to several local car shows and drive around town alot so i get lots of
questions.

I recently started going to local cruise nights here on Long Island to show
(off) my DeLorean.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to best do this.  As of
now I just drive up and "launch" both door after I park.  This usually gets
things going, but I was wondering what others have done.

I think using LED lamps for the interior and door edge lights would save some
power.  What was the site selling them?  Are there LED replacements for the
side markers and "parking" lights?

Very interesting pictures, even more so because they look EXACTLY like the
broken one I have here in my office. Unfortunately, I don't know what VIN it
came off, so to perhaps correlate it to a bad batch of torsion bars is no
longer possible.

It's not just brain power - it's money.  Not many
people want to put up the tens of thousands of dollars
it would take to engineer a solution.  Then add on
the hundreds of thousands to actually make the solution
in reasonable numbers.  Compared to this, the prices that
replacement bars are selling for now is a relative
bargain.

Heh...last time I went on a road trip I was discussing my desire to

such a bad car because 'with all that aluminium body and a steel
frame there's no way it can move with just 130 hp'. He didn't
believe me when I corrected him until my friend goes 'Dude, this kid
know what he's talking about. He's been looking this stuff up for

Then there was the American Car Encyclopedia, stating that it was
only made in 1979 and only 5000 were made, they were overweight,
underpowered and underdeveloped. I'm tired of stupid (ignorant)

Subject: A/C System Questions.

Right now, I'm gearing up to repair my A/C system, and have a few
questions that hopfully others here who are more familiar with this
area may have answers to.

1. What are the lengths/specs of the High pressure, the Low pressure,
and the Adaptor hoses? $170+ for each hose is kinda expensive, and
I'm not exactly thrilled by the prospect of replacing my existing
hoses, with more 22+ year old hoses for that price. So a nice price
comparison to having new barrier hose punched for my car is a
tempting alternative. Even if I had 50' of hose @ $5 a foot, it's
still more economical.

2. If I did have custom hoses made, would there be a problem with
fitting my stock adaptors to the new barrier hose? As I've read while
researching this issue, barbed connectors can sometimes pierce the
neoprene inner layer of the hose, resulting in a possible leak.

3. Does a Variable Orifice Valve (VOV) really help? So far in
researching this little part, I've seen no cons for it's use listed.
And, I have also seen ones designed specificly for "Severe Climates."

4. If leak detecting dye is added into the system, can this have any
immediate, or long term negative effects on system performance,
and/or component life?

5. Does the use of a VOV affect high & low pressues when attempting
to charge/diagnose the system?

6. I know for a fact that the A/C switch on the accumulator has been
tampered with. Should I attempt to modify this, or should I simply
purchase a new switch to return it back to factory calibration?

Thanks in advance, and if I have any more questions, I'll be sure and
post them! ;)

Subject: Delorean 1981 DMC

hey everyone!

I'm looking at FINALLY purchasing a Delorean.  It is a 1981 delorean DMC-12, 45000 miles.  This is the catch:

It WILL start up.  You can let the engine sit in idle, but no gas gets to the intake.  In other words, you cannot drive it.  We believe at first hand that the fuel is not getting to the intake, possibly due to the fuel pump needing to be replaced, or there is something wrong with the fuel pump relay.  He is offering it to me for $4500 as is, or he will get it fixed (the interior [steering wheel and the vinyl walls) need some replacing, but he is WILLING to do it at no charge) and make it to where it will run and drive for $8500.  My two questions to everyone:

1.  Can anyone verify our theories as to what may be wrong?

2.  Is this a good asking price?

He claims everything else works.  I saw the car myself (while jumping up and down); I opened the doors, struts work perfectly, the interior looks intact and good.  The "trunk" looks great, the engine looks very nice for being 23 yrs old.  He claims it's a Lotus engine, that this was the original engine put in the car (I thought it was a V-6 Volvo?).  I mention that just in case if it is a different engine, there may be a different problem than what most Delorean owners commonly would suggest.  I hope to hear some ideas - I look to have this car by Dec 2003!!!  If I do, I will send pics!!! (excited as heck)

I would suggest getting someone who knows a bit about them to go and look at
the car with you. I will go if you are close to me.. I am in lower NY state.

The price seems about on par with the condition you mentioned. I personally
would say get it for the cheaper price and, if you have the knowledge to do so,
install the parts yourself. This way you are sure of the workmanship and plus
that's p[art of the fun of working on a D - you get very familiar with how they
go toether and such.

I have been learning a lot from my own work on my car... enjoy the ride.

Jeremiah,

For I would recommend getting the pre-install checklist:

   http://www.usadmc.com/files/report.pdf

It gives you the right things to look for.  If you really want to be picky, download the concours manual.  At least it has photos of what your stock Lotus engine is supposed to look like.  :-)  Lotus did work on the Delorean project, so I'm pretty sure the engine is the original Volvo and the seller is misinformed.

If the fuel pump was faulty the car would not start.  There are a bajillion other things that could cause this problem, as the evidenced by the recent thread on a similar problem.

The bottom line is that I'd take a kinda-running DMC for $4500 in a heartbeat.  That's barely the price of a parts car (and I know a guy that will give you $400 for the torsion bar, lol).  We need to come up with a value of a DeLorean that suffers only from neglect, and it still undamaged in body/panels/frame/glass/etc. but I think $4500 is dirt-cheap, even including the tow.  :-)

I only wish to temper your excitement with a dose of reality: the car needs work.  Lots of work.  And unless you have a mechanic that you would trust with your life, your best bet is to do the work yourself.

Without attempting to value your free time, I'm betting that you'll spend at least that $4500 again in parts to get this car running and street legal, maybe that number again to get it comforable and attractive.  Still you will have gotten a DMC very cheap.

I think Dave Stragand paid $3000 for his "car" and it took him 2 years to get it to the point that yours is at now.  :-)

Good luck!

battery was dead, so I put a new DieHard battery in.  Driving home that day
the battery light was still on, however I did have more volts.  The next day I
ordered a new alternator from PJ Grady and had it overnighted to me.   The
next day, day 2 of the new battery, while I was driving home from work the
battery completly dies and the car stalls out on me. Luckly I was able to get
it out of the way of traffic and into a nearby parking light.  I called my
wonderful wife and she came and picked me up.  I took out the battery and had
her drive me to Sears, where I picked up a new battery.  After installation of
the new battery, I was able to drive my Delorean home; where I could change
out the alternator.  Installation of the new alternator went pretty smooth.  I
started the car up in the parking lot, and everything seemed to be working
well.  I had 13 volts with all the accessories on, life was good.  Friday, on
my way to work I noticed the volt gauge fluctuating.  That night driving it
around, again the battery died.  My wife and I had to jump the car 3 times (1
time with the assistance of a police officer) and drive it the dark without
the lights to get the car to my parents house, which was nearby.  Once there I
put the battery on a charger, and let it charge for a couple of ours.  I also
found a loose wire going to the alernator,  a butt connection had come loose.
I cut the butt connector off and soldered the two wires together.  Again after
installing the battery everything appears to work fine.  After a driving this
week, I have noticed the volt gauge will sometimes drop to the 10.5 mark in
traffic.  However when I put a voltmeter on the battery at the same time, I
get a constant 13.5 volts.  Is the volt gauge measuring the volts in the
battery?  Or the volts going through the system with the help of the
alternator?  Could the volt gauge have gone bad or is there a part between the
battery, alternator, and the gauge that could have gone bad?

Thanks for the help.

My car does that too. It'll show 10.5 volts on the gague, and read almost 14 straight from the battery. I've always attributed it to the fact that my alternator doesn't kick in until about 1500 rpm's. *shrug*

I give Tony a mere two trips in the D before he speeds again....

Looking at the recent posts on restoring DeLoreans and the cost it seems that
there are all ranges of conditions on a car that just sits.

As far as the $4500 car goes and what I have heard if you don't want it pass
it on to me I'll be glad to go get it.

After doing three restorations this year all three required different repairs
and different amounts of time to restore.  Some of you saw the one in
Chicago.  Believe it or not it will be in the Concours in Pigeon Forge with its new
owner.

I am going to be on the lookout for DeLoreans Under $6,000 and you all will
be interested in what I am going to do with it.

So far everyone I have found is over $6K AND low miles.

As long as I can find them I hope to be able to restore them and get them
back on the road

See you in Pigeon Forge

Ken

Subject: DeLorean Car Show Music wanted

As most of you that were at Memphis know I like to use music that is from
DeLorean owners or their friends etc.

I also need to stay out of copyright problems

So I am starting to collect music for Pigeon Forge.

All music is welcom all I ask is to keep it clean due to the fact that we do
have young people in the group.

So if you have any music you want us to use please send it to DeLorean Car
Show

thanks

Ken

I saw something tonight on the LeMay Collection, and it sparked my curiosity as to who owns the largest collection of DeLoreans? Anyone on this list have more than 5? More than 10? Or know of anyone who has a large collection? I know I'll eventually at least want a black interior automatic to go with my grey interior 5-speed. Anyways... just curious!

Hey Everyone!

I wanted to give everyone an update on my upcoming 81 Delorean.  Me and a fellow Delorean owner are going back to the car today (Thursday).  We are going to ask the seller if he'll let us tow it to the Delorean owner's house and maybe we can play around between the two cars.  The other Delorean owner built his literally from 22 boxes full of the parts; he completely constructed the car out of nothing but the parts in boxes.  Hopefully, we can get an idea on what is wrong.  I told him about it over the phone, and he already has a couple ideas.  We'll see what happens.  Thanks for your input everyone, hopefully we can get this 81 D up and running soon!
