Air leaks easier than water so when you fill the system with a 50/50
mixture of water and anti-freeze you should be fine. Don't waste money
on an origional plastic bottle. They are way too expensive and will
eventually crack and leak. Get a metal header bottle. The best test is
to fill with water, pressurize to 15 psi and watch if the level drops.
If it does drop then it is going out someplace. Check the oil level,
if it is going up then the coolant IS getting past the liner seals.

Make sure the alternator belt isn't getting chewed up by the fan on
the alternator. Make sure that you have completly bled the system, the
water pump won't work if it is filled with air and the radiator can't
cool the coolant if it is half filled with air. Loosen the small hose
on the top right side to get the air out of the radiator. I don't
think the water pump is bad but you might want to replace the hoses or
at least make sure all the hose clamps are tight. Pressure test to 15
psi for 15 minutes. There should be NO leaks. Do not run straight
water, you should always have a 50/50 mixture of soft water and a
premium brand anti-freeze that says it is good for aluminum motors.

Let me get this strait.... you performed a pressure test BEFORE you ran
the engine up after replacing the head gaskets?! Oh dear. The head
gaskets have an adhesive in them which bonds the mating surfaces
together and only works once the engine has been run up to temperature;
the adhesive flows and the head gaskets are properly bonded. Now you've
gone and forced water between them in places, you should seriously
consider stripping them back down to dry them off and replace with new
gaskets.
If it makes you feel any better I've done a similar thing where we had
to strip one head off again after filling with coolant.

VIN 10304 was the last craig radio
VIN 10305 was the first ASI

There is no clock on the lower center column. If you really wanted one though it is
delorean part number 110687 available at delorean.com for $493.75

My car had both. I am guessing that they picked up what ever was on the
floor and used them when assembling the car. My other guess would be that
the machine screw threads were buggered up so they used a self tapping screw
to fix it.

Now, in the light of a lot of discussion on this mailing list this query may seem a little trite and trivial but it is one that a would-be DMC owner has always wondered: how does the car fare in the drive-thru?
Of course the car was designed well before the drive-thru's became prevelent and thus the windor is of little help here, so is it just a case of carefully driving through with your door up? Any tales or tribulations would be welcome :)

More than likely you still have air in the system - probably an air
lock at the radiator. A water pump gone bad usually makes noise and
leaks but still functions - unless it froze, and is not turning,
which might explain the belt thing. An alternator lockup will cause
the same belt mess too. Did you check for rotation on the water pump
and alternator?
If all seems ok, I would recommend, when cool, loosening the bleed
hose on the top of the radiator and bleeding off any trapped air in
the radiator. It is on the passenger side - the smaller hose. It is
a little awkward and you will probably have some coolant spill out -
but at least you know the air is out then.
Now that the radiator is full of coolant, check the reservoir again
and fill to the maximum recommended level. Next bleed off any air at
the thermostat housing air-bleed fitting. The extra bleed off kit is
not a necessity in my opinion - the engine bleed is more than enough
to get the air out of a properly functioning system.
Start it up and watch for the recirculation stream in the coolant
bottle. If there is a stream at least the engine is circulating
coolant. As the engine warms monitor the recirculation stream. If it
stops, open the thermostat bleed fitting and let any air escape. I
will often put a hose over the fitting and let it bleed constantly
into a container until I am through with the system. Keep the
coolant tank at the max recommended level.
As the engine continues to warm also monitor the hot side hose for
circulation. As the thermostat starts to opens - the temp gage
should be at the first white mark up the bottom mark - it will start
to get hot indicating circulation. Trapped air, if any will begin to
flow through the system. It may bubble up in the tank - Just keep
plenty of coolant in the tank. If the return hose to the pump is
getting warm at this point you should have enough circulation on the
system that it will bleed off by it self now. Keep the coolant
bottle at the correct level and when the fans come on turn on the
heater - just turn the air dial to vent. That will allow the heater
valve to open and remove any air in the heater. After the fans cycle
off, turn off the engine, be sure the coolant bottle is at the max
level or slightly over and put the cap on. Take it for a test drive.
If nothing internally is wrong you should be good to go.
I would keep a spare belt in the trunk and the tools needed to put
it on. That belt probably came off because of a problem - the
alternator bearing would be my guess.

Ok so here's what happened to me just now.....
Jumped in the D and set off for a 20 mile trip to a car shop, all the way
the car behaved impeccably,(that's a first)
after a good 15 mins of motorway driving I took the exit ramp and came to a
stop at the junction as I sat there the car wanted to hunt between almost
stall and 2000rpm ??????? never did it again all day!!!!!
So parked up at the shop for around 20 mins, when we got back in to set off,
turned the key and nothing.... absolutely sod all .
I could see the dash illuminate as it should, hear the relays click over but
that was it, not even a revolution of the starter it was as if there was no
starter motor on the car.
So I started to check the fuses and all connections that had any thing to do
with the ignition circuit. All good.
so I sat and had a think, Came up with nothing, after 15 mins the shop guys
told me I would have to move the car as they were closing. "Need a push
please"
I got in the car and turned the key one more time and she roared into life,
since then she has started first time every time.
Any Ideas??
OH and the starter is good total rebuild 100 miles ago.

I looked through a few parts catalogs and could not find an exact match
for the Delorean ignition switch but I found a couple that appeared
close.
My ignition switch seem to stick in the locked column mode no matter
what I do to smooth or lubricate the pin. What is your problem?

Your problem sound familiar.
I had similar symptoms and finally, after changing the main relay and
rpm relay did not solve the problem, I installed a separate ignition
switch in the relay compartment. No problems since, other than finding
that I also had a bad (corroded) connection at the fuel pump
connector.

Have had this too; the "bendix" (the gear on the starter)
probably didn't engage the toothed edge of the flywheel,
if this happens the relay that actually switches the starter
on doesn't engage. This is designed to engage only if the
"bendix" is fully out, into the fywheel...
When this happens you usually only need to put the car in gear
and roll it a bit, this rotates the flywheel and you're sorted!
Am not sure if this system applies to DeLoreans too, but I've had
this happen on mine too, as well as my Escort, my Nissan and the
Volkswagen from work, so it's not really a biggy...

Does your key work good? I worn out key will bugger up the switch and the
locking pin.
Don't just get a trace-copy done, get a code-cut key, original specs.
Some one on the list does them... let's see. Who was that? Oh, yeah it's me.
I'm not shilling for myself: there's not a scent (or is that cent?) of
profit it in for me yet.
As for cross-reference; I believe there are some Euro cars (Volvo?) that
cross-over. It may even be in the xref sheet. But I would get one from the
DMC vendors-- it's worth it.

I always just open the door. Even if you could fit your food through the tiny window, you probably couldn't reach up far enough because of how low the car is, and the design of the door to grab the food, and exchange money. I usually have to sit on the edge of the sill to get my food and money. I've never had any bad experiences doing this... on the contrary! It always causes a frenzy amongst the people working in the restaurants... about half the workers crowd around the window asking me questions and giving me compliments on the car... lol.

I do exactly whatyou described...when I go to get the food at the
drive thru window I simply open the door...not much of a problem
there.
I do have a problem at my bank though....The commercial window lane
in the drive thru is higher than my car,...so the first time I pulled
up I didn't realize it and waited and waited and then honked a few
times before the woman looked down out of the window. Now I know to
open the door so I can be seen....I feel like a little person at a
store counter....

I had the Yoko's on my car when I bought it, and HATED them. The tread life was absolutely unacceptable, I don't like the way they look on the car, and they were scary in the rain. I don't think they're still available anymore either... they were discontinued within the last year or so. I replaced my tires with Michelin Pilot XGT's... and I couldn't be happier with them. I believe their traction is every bit as good, if not better than the Yoko's (though I think the new Goodyears look the best), the ride MUCH better, and they also look really good on the car. Their tread wear has proven much better too. Quite a few owners are now putting these on their cars, so I'm not the lone nutty one... LOL. Congrats on the new DeLo too by the way!

I guess we have all wondered that at some point or another before
purchasing the car...
Look carefully at a picture of the DeLorean from above. You will notice
that the door hinges at quite near the center of the roof. This was
done in an effort to allow the doors to open more up, than out.
I routinely pull into the drive-through ATM, (which, as is typical, has
very little space, side to side) and open my door at the screen. I'm
sure the security camera gets a good scare for a few moments, but I have
yet to pull so close that the door won't open all the way. It is
possible, but it's easier to avoid than you might expect.
I also have a fairly small two car garage. Fortunately I have two
DeLoreans...because otherwise I wouldn't be able to park two cars in
there, without rolling down the window(s) and pulling a "Dukes of
Hazzard" stunt.
The doors are one of the reasons I truly believe in the design of the
DeLorean. I used to just think the car just looked cool...but since I
purchased mine, almost 5 years ago, I've come to vastly appreciate it's
superior functionality and ergonomics.

Subject: A/C Failure
This is the second year my A/C has worked great and not required
Freon. While driving down the road on a hot day and thinking how
relieved I was that the leaks had been fixed, the A/c suddenly quit
working. This was not gradual: great cooling one minute, then, when
re-started no a/c.
I discovered that there was not continuity on the low pressure switch.
When I momentarily jumpered the plug to this switch, the compresor
engaged, front fans came on.
Is this likely a bad switch or some other problem?

Like many owners, I am not impressed with the original Craig
radio in my '81 D. I plan on keeping it for car shows, but the
reception is pretty bad (I also plan on getting a power antenna-the
windshield one is pretty weak as well). I looked through past posts
and saw someone recommended the Blaupunkt brand. This one caught my

Does anyone else have one like this? The website gives the
dementions, but I have no idea what the dimensions on the Craig are.
Does it appear to have to correct dimensions to put where the Craig
tape deck once was? I hate to have to change too much in the console
to be able to intall the unit. I like the styling because it seems
to fit a black interior (and the price is right :)

You could install full size power windows and not have to deal with the
stock small window problem.
That's what I did and it made the car less claustrophobic and fun to
cruise in - since you can now wave out the window.

Probably need a newer starter-relay in the relay compartment. Relay
number 10 in the compartment diagram .
IF - you are using original style relays you can switch it with the
high beam relay (relay number 2) and verify the function. I suggest
the high beam because it is the least used for most cars.
Otherwise, except for just looking for something unusual and
cleaning connections, you're probably going to have to wait until it
does it again to find the fault.

Drive-thru's are not a problem at all in a DeLorean. It's the lack of cup holders
that'll kill ya! ;)
Pretty much, yes. You do have to drive up to the window with the door open.
That way you can visusally measure the distance between your door, and the
wall, in order to get your car as close to the counter as possible. Using this
method, I've never had to lean over much (if at all), nor get our of my car
when it comes to getting food, or paying a utility bill. But you would want to
open the door *before* pulling up, and not once you're at the window. Some
drive-thru's will use counters of different lengths, and some will have those
retractable drawers. And because they're all different lengths, you really don't
have anything to gague them by when it comes to door interferance. If the
counter is out too far, then you may not be able to open the door. Or if you try
to, you'll hit something. I learned that one the first time I went thru a drive-thru,
and almost hit the counter with my car.
Some times another factor that will cause you to have to open the door is a
crapy intercom. Normally, I can speak thru the window just fine, albeit in a
louder voice. But if their mic is on the fritz, or another car in line/other lane has
a loud exhaust or sound system, or you own cooling fans turn on... Then the
door is gonna come up, so you can yell over the noise.
Otherwise, a DeLorean is no different than any other car that you'd take to a
drive-thru, or any other errands. Well, with the exception of the attention that
you'll get!

I've never had problems getting a bag full of food or a large drink
through the window at a drive-thru.
The reason I don't use a drive-thru is simply because the drive-thru
workers feel they need to go through the entire ritual of bringing
every employee in the restaurant up to the window to gawk and point at
your car -- you end up being an inconvenience to those in line behind
you. Either that, or the employees just stare with their eyes wide
and jaws dropped, paying very little attention to the fact that you
also asked for ketchup and salt.
I use the drive-thru about once a year, just to remind myself why I
don't use the drive-thru.

P.S. I was just a toddler back then, but I'm pretty sure there were
lots of drive-thrus and drive-ins when the cars were designed.
