Subject: Magazines
The recent post by Trevor had me respond to him but in light of the fact that
Arnie has indicated it is not a deliverable address I think I will respond
here.
The reason for the DeLorean Car Show Magazine and the new Gullwing magazine
is to give people what they want. There is also DeLoreans that is more
directed towards DMC Houston. I am the editor of DeLorean Car Show magazine and
believe the DeLorean following want a magazine that is easy to write articles for
and fun to read. You will also not guess when you are getting the next issue.
We will meet our delivery dates.
The first two issues seem to have done just that and I totally disagree that
there is nothing to write about. We have articles coming in all the time and
the response so far has been very positive. When any magazine excludes groups
of people then it is obvious that those people will look elsewhere. And that
is what we are seeing.
The DeLorean Car Show Magazine is also open to ANYONE who wants to write on
the subject of DeLorean and you do not have to belong to a specific group or
even subscribe to the magazine. It is an open forum although for the benefits
of the readers we will edit as necessary to accommodate space and normal
editing.
As with the DeLorean Car Show this is designed to be your magazine and we
will follow the direction of the readers. We offer a money back guarentee if you
are not satisfied as we do with everything else. We also will ship anywhere
for no additional cost so everyone can enjoy the magazine for the same price
including Europe and Australia.
The main point here is that I for one have tried over the years to bridge the
gap between all groups and have opened the forum for everyone in the Car Show
and now the Magazine. That philosophy will continue.
When you start to target limited areas you make your product more selective.
And that is what we have seen.
Its now a matter of marketing and publicity and may the best magazine win.
If you haven't tried DeLorean Car Show Magazine go to DeLoreancarshow.com and
click on Magazine.
If you want to submit an article or have any suggestions please feel free to
do so the addresses are on the web page as well. If there is any avenue that
you think we need to fill tell us and submit an article or idea and we will
give it a try. We are probably the most open forum available besides the DML
so its up to you as to where we go.
Thanks for your support. There has been a marked increase in membership over
the past few weeks and we thank you.

Subject: Re: Re: Digest Number 1520
Ten years ago, when I was first shopping for a DeLorean, a good friend and loyal Porsche
enthusiast tried to talk me out of it. He showed me a copy of Porsche Panorama, the
Porsche Club of America's magazine. "Just look at Porsche's loyal following," he said,
"Do you think someone publishes a magazine for DeLoreans? I doubt it."
It sure seemed like he had a point. Who would make a magazine devoted to just 8,500
cars? (a figure I believed at the time)
When I discovered DeLorean World I was greatly encouraged. In fact, if the DOA and
DeLorean World didn't exist I would not have bought a DeLorean, nor would I have gotten
involved in the DeLorean community.
Fast forward to 2003. By some strange twist, today I can subscribe to FOUR different
DeLorean magazines at the same time! All of them have color pictures and look just as
impressive on my coffee table as Porsche Panorama. In fact, DW's evolution into a
lifestyle magazine makes it seem less redundant.
I plan to subscribe to all four, just because I can!
Frankly, I don't expect all four magazines to last. One year of all four would cost $72
+ $36 + 27.50 + $48 = 183.50. That includes DOA membership and half of a two year
subscription to DeLorean Car Show magazine. That's almost enough to pay for a new water
pump, or an original copy of Stainless Steel Illusion, or three nights at the Smoky
Shadows Motel in Pigeon Forge.
I doubt that there are enough DeLorean enthusiasts who share my view to support so many
magazines. But as long as this wild orgy of DeLorean publishing keeps going, I'll hang
on and enjoy the ride.

I have been trying to reach the DOA as per Trevor's suggestion. There
is NO contact info except for John Truscott whose phone doesn't answer
and there is no message. The DOA website has no contact info and when
I tried to leave an e-mail on their mail page it was refused by the
server. The e-mail address for Trevor won't work either. The only time
I got any attention from them was a post on the DML which they won't
publicly acknowledge exists (except here in Trevor's post for the
first time!) It seems strange that such a public appearing
organization makes itself so hard to contact yet they put themselves
foward as the premier owner's organization. It would seem to me that
it is really a California club that is trying to make itself look
larger and more important than it really is. I was only trying to
contact them to let them know that I have received a lot of e-mails
privately agreeing with me and telling me how they don't like what is
happening but they won't come out publicly. The DOA should know what
is going on and ignoring it won't make it go away like they hoped the
DML would just go away. Between the direction the magazine is going
and the change in the membership rules IMHO they are not doing things
to improve the DOA. I would hate to see it disappear, it was the glue
that held the Delorean owners togther for a long time in the early
years when it wasn't clear what was going to happen and there is an
extensive archive of technical info accumulated over the years.

Subject: Final thoughts RE: My water pump failed again...
In response to an earlier request to post a final email on these
email topics, here is my (hopefully) final post on my water pump
troubles.
New pump from Special-T-Auto worked great, and my D is back in
service. I will note that the pump from Special-T-Auto, rotated by
hand much more smoothly than did the pump from Volvo. It is also
threaded at the end, and the shaft protrudes more, but these are of
no concern to me.
Make sure if you do move your own pulley from stock pump to a Volvo
type replacement, that you look on Special-T-Auto's site for the
pulley reference picture. You can press the pulley on using a press
or vice and a socket on the shaft at the impeller side to save the
impeller.
Also, I was able to R&R pump without removing the intake manifold,
and etc., though I did have to loosen the four bolts common to it and
the heads to reattach the rear hoses. This may be of value to someone
who has a situation like mine where the o-rings and hoses under the
intake do not need attention (replaced recently).

Subject: My water pump failed again, revisited.
Thought I'd share my experience this weekend.
After rebuilding the engine because of a bad water pump, the darn
thing failed again on the first day I actually drove it anywhere
after the rebuild.
When I took the failed water pump out this weekend, the pulley would
not rotate (and by the way, I only removed the belt, the throttle
barrel assembly and the intake plenum 'w pipe').
I saw on www.specialtauto.com a picture showing how to tell if the
pulley was pushed on far enough and sure enough it was out 3/4 of an
inch.
When I took the back of the pump off, I found that the impeller wheel
had indeed been rubbing the back of the water pump case, and in fact
there was quite a bit of damage to both the back and the impeller
wheel too.
This rubbing must have transferred the heat to the seal, and caused a
failure. I figure I sped up the process by having the belt very
tight, which caused the pulley and impeller to try to align, causing
it to push into the backing.
I think I'll let SpecialTAuto put on the pulley this time. Would have
saved me this fun experience!!

Subject: Air Conditioning Lesson's Learned
In the Space business, after a launch we hold what we call
a "Lesson's Learned Meeting," so everyone can apply our lesson's
learned to future launches, which helps make things flow smoother in
the future.
I want to share my A/C refit lesson's, for those needing or
considering tackling it in the future.
I took my car in for a estimate to charge the A/C, and found that
having the compressor out of car for 8 months, had caused it to begin
to freeze up - when turning the compressor clutch (center nut, common
to pulley), with a socket/ratchet - it turned, but was obviously
bound. If the prior owner, who is the one who removed it, had stored
it with oil and closed the rear ports, it may have made it to being
reinstalled. I could have rebuilt it, but opted for a new unit.
My estimate to have the compressor repaired, system updated and
converted to R134A was $910. Being cash poor due to buying a
DeLorean, I decided to try the conversion myself.
First thing I downloaded the two guides on the DMCNEWS tech site.
Thank you!
I bought a new compressor, drained the mineral oil (per Dave's
section on the DMCNEWS tech site), bought a new accumulator (actually
two - DMC-H couldn't tell me what desiccant was inside theirs, so I
opted to return it and get one that wasn't a mystery), a refill kit,
gauge and a GM orifice tube.
I took out the accumulator and since the system had already been
converted to R134A before I bought it I wasn't so concerned with
flushing it, so I just blew out the lines with oil free compressed
air.
The low side was easy to blow out and a lot of ester oil came out.
The high side was blocked, so I disassembled the other line to the
evaporator (it goes through the fire wall). It is the line that is in-
between the accumulator and the right wheel.
This is important because I couldn't find anywhere else that told me
where I could find the "white GM Orifice Tube" to replace. It is in
this line. It actually was what was blocked. It is the system filter
(according to the back of the new orifice tube package). It took me
an hour nibbling away at it with a pair of long nose pliers until I
could get the brass tubule out. After that I ground down one of my
wife's crocheting hooks (with permission), to the right size to fit
in the tubule hole, then I extracted it. Of course I also used a pipe
cleaner first (the kind for copper water pipe), and then blew in
compressed air the back way to keep from getting contaminants in the
system.
Finally, I reassembled, and vacuumed down the system and left it over
night. I then checked to see if it held the vacuum by depressing the
needle at the low side port. It held and so I reapplied vacuum for a
half hour and then charged the system.
Yes I did use the cans WITH oil, (call me the rebel) of course I made
sure all the oil was out of the system first, and put in two cans
before I started the car, to make sure I had enough oil in the new
compressor.
It now blows ice cold. All pressures are within specs and I used the
amounts in the workshop manual, compensated for R134A (5% less).
Morale of the story - replace the orifice tube every time!!

Subject: Fw: DeLorean meet
I did a preview trip last Saturday, for the upcoming DeLorean meet in London, Ontario, Canada, on Saturday, June 14, 2003.
The indoor marina / pool at the motel looked inviting. I was told we will have a designated parking place at the front of the motel, and a private room for Sunday breakfast (order off the menu) before our photo op at my home.
The cruise portion includes a small sample of something similar to the "Dragon's Back" road with twists and turns. The pit stops include, a winery, pioneer town, view of a classic original dragstrip (where I won trophies in the old days), lunch on the beach at Lake Erie, ice cream at an ice cream factory, see famous historical sites, a peanut store that has samples, and stuff to die for, then to the show and shine portion Saturday afternoon, at a family park with waterslides, mini golf, go karts, driving ranges, wall climbing, bumpercars, etc. The evening will be a continuation of fun at a mini Dave and Busters type restaurant with cosmic bowling lanes, pool tables, video games, virtual Pebble Beach golf, etc. The management has provided us with a front door reserved parking area.
Sunday afternoon offers a huge free car show at a local auto parts parking lot - perhaps as many as 300 cars. Ours qualify for display since they are over 20 years old.
The cost, you ask? Registration is zero, nil, nadda, free, rein, zip! Pay for what you eat / drink!
It appears we may have over 12 cars coming from Ohio, Michigan, New York, Ontario, and points beyond. I heard from Ron at Gullwing magazine today and he is coming up with the yellow customized DeLorean, and a camera for his next issue. I think Ken will be here from the 2004 Pigeon Forge Show and the DeLorean Car Show Magazine, with one of his 3 Deloreans.
.............and lots of freebies, too!
Sounds like a party!!!!
We will have a great time!!!! Bring a camera!!!!!

I've tried real hard to stay out of the DOA/DW fray, but that statement has to be addressed. Some years ago while still a loyal DOA member and long time DW advertiser, I did just that. I challenged the DOA leadership with various concerns, including violation of California's laws regulating non-profit corporations, their preferential treatment in DW of one particular advertiser, his being allowed to pass judgment in advance on my ads before they were published, misuse of association funds, etc. Instead of a reasonable response or inquiry on their part, I got a nasty letter from HIS attorney warning me to back off. I told his attorney where he could put his threat, but ultimately had to decide that DOA was no longer worthy of my support as either a member or an advertiser. Also, I presumed that as more and more members got fed up with DOA it would just implode, and like most of us who are aware of the goings-on there, I really don't care any more what happens to them - they and their little travel magazine are irrelevant. I think Gary "IN2TIME" summed it up very well.

Speaking as someone who has been a member of the DOA since about 1987, I
agree that the new format doesn't interest me as much as the old. On the
other hand, I agree with Trevor that there aren't that many topics left to
delve into that deeply concerning the technical part of the car. Between the
past issues of Delorean World and this list, just about every part of the
car has been discussed and dissected in extreme detail.
I'm still in a wait and see position concerning Delorean World and its new
direction, but lets be honest, could any magazine possibly hold up to the
amount of tech talk on this list and the immediate responses that are given
to virtually any question. Maybe its time for DW to go in a different
direction. Whenever something changes there will always be someone that's
not happy with it.

A severely bent strut mount is one bit of damage that I have seldom
seen. The only strut mounts that I have seen severely bent were the
ones where the owners put a brace or clamp on the strut to hold the
door open in a parade. The brace on the body never broke but the
bouncing of the car did bend some back to a major angle. For a long
time I used Paul Pitman's struts but since he got out of the
business I have always used the DMCH struts. Everything seems fine.
The reason I preferred Paul's and now DMCH, is because the amount of
back pressure used to slow the door down at close to fully open is
in my opinion just right. Grady's struts don't seem to have any back
pressure. On hot days the DMCH struts allow the door to open smooth
while it is also slowed down by back pressure when near fully open.
That way the door does not open at full speed and stress the mounts
at the stop position. Grady's struts just seem to allow the door to
fly open. Often in Houston, especially on a hot summer afternoon, I
was more worried about the mounts breaking off when I opened the
door. I have always used the DMCH struts with confidence.

Subject: Re: Dash Led's
Hello list,
First post to DML and probably the first post from Japan also.
I would like to share my experience of LED conversion. I replaced the incandescent
bulbs on the A/C panel and in some of the switches on the panel to LEDs. The LEDs I
used are not the ones from Jamstrait. They were not available when I did the
conversion two year ago. It would have been much easier with those.
I did this conversion because I was worried about the significant heat that is produced
by those bulbs. I thought it might even distort the panel in a long run. LEDs draw less
current so it is good for the car. I estimated the current consumed in the A/C panel to
be about 1.5A. By replacing them to LEDs it is reduced by a factor of 20. Another
advantage is that once you replace the bulbs to LEDs you won't need to open it again
for replacing the bulbs. LEDs will last almost forever.
I am pleased with the results. It gives much crisper and clearer impression to the
panel than the original. It is literally cool.
One thing that might be unique to my modification is the use of current limiting
diodes. They regulate the current to 15mA regardless of the supplied voltage. This
gives a constant brightness regardless of the condition of the electrical system in the
car. The drawback is that the rheostat does not have much effect. It does not bother
me, though since I do not need to worry about the heat any more.
I used 6 hyper-intensity LEDs (2 White, One Blue, One red, Two green) and 2 diodes
for the A/C panel, One red and one diode for the Hazard switch. In some part, I used
two or three LED in series with this diode. The voltage drop is different for different
color of LED, so you need to take it into account when planning the combination.
I had to cut off the tops of each LEDs a bit for the A/C panel, but I did not need to
modify the panel at all. Replacing the bulb in a switch is a little tricky. First, you take
out the switch and open it carefully. You then solder a LED and a diode together, and
tailor its legs to fit the contacts where the original incandescent bulbs have been.
I posted the pictures on the web.

I am sorry for the poor quality of the pictures. They are out of focus. At that time I
had a very old digital camera which had a fixed focus and it was extremely difficult to
take such kind of pictures.
Regarding the choice of the color of LED, Mike is right. I should have used a white
LED for the temperature control part of the A/C panel instead of blue. Experiments
showed white LEDs give much pleasing color to our eyes. I think this can be explained
by the fact that the wavelength of color LED is almost monochromatic, whereas the
coloring of the panel is not. By using a monochromatic light source only a small part
of the light can transmit. Also the intended color cannot be reproduced.
Specs of the LEDs I used. The cost of each LED is about 500 yen (= $4) here in Japan.
White LED --- NSPW500BS
4000 mcd (TYP) 20mA, VF = 4V
Blue LED --- E1L51-3BC02
1800 mcd (TYP) 30mA, Wavelength - 465-475 nm, VF = 5V
Bluish Green --- E1L51-KC0A2-1
3200 mcd (TYP) 10mA, Wavelength - 493-498 mn, VF = 3.2V
(This LED is used for green traffic lights)
Current limiting diode - CRD-153 (15mA)
I hope this will be of some use to you.

I have these
individual colored led's to play with, but I didn't have green so I
could tell you how it
might look.

All,
I found a kit to help eliminate air in the cooling system at
http://dmcnews.com/Techsection/cooling.htm
Does anyone know if Arnie Brandon is still selling these kits? It looks
the page has not been updated since 1999.

Subject: Alternative wheels
list,
I had the option of changing my alloy wheels on the DMC for a set my
friend had sitting in his garage of anouther car.
They were the universal fit type with loads of mounting holes, sure
enough they fitted fine and looked pretty sharp.
They were 15" rims with low profile tyres, slightly wider than the
stock front wheels, I can't remember the exact measurement.
The only problem is that obviously the stock wheels are considerably
wider at the rear than at the front, when people have upgraded their
wheels have they kept the same configuration or have they
compromised and used a set that is wider than the original front and
slimmer than the original rear wheels.
Just interested from a saftey/handling point of view.
