Subject: Door locks

It's been a while since I last posted a question, so here we go.

Once again I find myself trying to get my central locking working. I have
had my lock module upgraded and I know it works fine.. also put new
solenoids in..

But still all I could do is lock both doors from the drivers side, and
unlock neither from either side.

The last place I hade to check was the connections under the T-panel which I
have done today, there was a little corrosion on the spade terminals but
nothing much, so that is now all cleaned up.

Where did that get me ?

Well the same position as above, however if both the doors are open and you
move the lock rocker in either door the opposite one try's to move in both
lock and unlock mode. once you close the doors back to square one.

Is there something I need to adjust, or am I just going to have to live with
it?

Cheers

Paul

Jonas and List,

The best looking Delorean kick panels can be purchased from Eric Weber,
through Delorean Custom Fabrication Services and
can be viewed at:  www.ExoticDMC.com   If you can dream it,
chances are DCFS has built it or can build it to your specs.

Best way to reach Eric and Marni is via email, so if you need more
information or photos, send them a quick email request.

In the "Stereos" folder in the photos section, I have pics of the
prototype pods that I had fabricated and installed down @ Garden
Grove over 3 years ago. You can imagine the funny look I got when I
told Don what I wanted. Before that, he'd always had people get
smaller speakers, and put them in the dashboard. Which is where I put
the tweeters. When I came to pick the car up, he said that the
speaker set up had worked out really well. The picture doesn't really
do the boxes total justice though. When getting in and out of the
car, people don't notice them, so they don't look quite as out of
place as they do in the photo I took. I just got that angle so you
could see the entire assembly.

Since that time, DMC GG now sells preformed pods, which you can see
here:
http://deloreancarshow.com/dcs-2002/2002-vendors/w-101-0145_IMG.jpg

I haven't talked to anyone who's gotten these installed, so I'm not
sure of how these new ones are installed (mine are anchored with
screwes that go thru the carpet, and into the underbody), nor how far
back they sit. My are right there next to the door sill so the noise
isn't lost in the footwells. I also don't know if they will allow
clearance for the trunk release cable. For me, they were right in the
way, and so the latch handle had to be loosened, the cable slacked a
little, and the pivot bolt double nutted to allow it to swing out for
clearance. If you don't double nut the end, the handle can come
loose, and flop off the pivot bolt. You drive, it flops around,
hanging on the cable, and will break from the stress. That, and they
can sometimes compete with road noise thru the floor pan has been the
only downside to the speakers.

I don't know if Curtis is on the list, or if any one has sat in his
car with the doors closed, and the sound system on. But he has a
really nice set of speakers located on the center console, next to
the floor. I'm really interested in how these sound, and if the
quality is good. That way, I could install an amp, and have the extra
speakers there to balance the load of the current speakers, so they
don't have to work as hard.

Raph,

I put a ZF4HP22E (1989 Porsche) in my Rover V8 DeLorean.  It fit the
frame, though you have to make custom mounts.

I had a custom adapter plate made by Kennedy Engineering.

The ZF4HP22HL from 1984 is simpler and less expensive to install because
you don't need a computer to control it.

The Porsche shifter cable is a perfect length. This give you 4 forward
speeds including overdrive.  1st gear is a little lower than the stock
ZF3 in the D so you get a better of the line performance.

Louie,

The chevy 350 powered D at the Memphis show did use a stock
Delorean transmission and the owner did mention that he has
already gone through a few transmission input shafts, which
was the only transmission part damage that he has had.

Darryl Tinnerstet's Supercharged 4.3L Chevy V6 uses a stock
Delorean transmission and a custom "beefed up" input shaft,
all connected up using a custom engine/trans adapter plate.
Darryl has not reported any transmission part damage.

As for my D with an '84 Grand National Buick 3.8L Turbo V6,
the only transmission related damage was the input shaft
that was not seated in the Buick crank bushing and the nut
that backed out through the inspection cover.  Now that the
entire engine, clutch and transmission relationship has been
completely re-engineered to use the most OEM Delorean parts
as possible, all properly aligned and mounted for durability
and both quick and inexpensive replacement, I will let the
list know how this configuration works when its all together
and give it a good "shake down" test run and break-in period.

My High HP D setup should be ready for a test run very soon.

Rich W.

About the ZF4HP22HL, I presume it's a Porsche Tranny and also that is a
5 speed. Do you know which Porsche did that exactly came out of? Is it a
911, 944 or something else? And how good are those trannys and how much
hp/torgue can they handle?

Louie,

It is fairly easy to mate a stock Delorean 5 speed to any engine.  that
is what is done in most cases.

THe stock 5  speed is good to about 300 HP.  As for different
automatics, the Porsche trans is the  only one I know of that is RWD and

Rear engine.

Get a ZF4HP22HL from a 84.  It is the easiest to install, because of no
computer.

Subject: re:Engine Swaps and tranny Questions (Buick Version-LONG)

Hi Louie and list -  LONG POST ALERT

As I've just finished rebuilding the transmission in Rich's Buick
Grand-National powered car, I'll make some comments on what we found in the
process and my thoughts at least on this version. This car was (we believe)
assembled several years ago and street-driven for over 10,000 miles.
---This setup uses a custom-cast aluminum bellhousing that replaces the
stock DMC bellhousing and bolts up to the Buick engine. This is the design
formerly sold by Don Steger, and occasionally comes up for auction on eBay.
It has a few shortcomings, IMHO.  The custom bellhousing leaves a lot to be
desired. The casting is relatively thin, the mounting arrangement for the
clutch slave is not good,  it is difficult to install, and has a very poor
design for the clutch pivot. There were two significant design defects in
this installation.
---I compared notes with Darryl on his Supercharged Vortec installation.
Rather than the cast bellhousing, he used a custom-milled adapter/spacer
plate with the original DMC bellhousing. This is a much more elegant
solution than the custom bellhousing, and I'd recommend to anyone doing this
conversion to go that route. Darrell also has designed and installed a much
stronger input shaft (due to breakage) and other than that has not had
issues with the trans.
---On Rich's car, the transmission had failed in a somewhat common DMC
manner, i.e. the large nut that holds the main shaft together unscrewed
itself through the back end of the shift housing. I've seen this failure on
several stock cars so I'm not sure it was related to the high horsepower,
although the vibration caused by the second "Design Defect" may have
contributed to it. The input shaft, while damaged from "design defect #1"
was not broken.
---The original clutch setup used a pressure plate and disc of undetermined
origin. The disc was smaller than the stock DMC (8-3/4") but had metallic
facings. It exhibited normal wear but there were signs of high heat on the
flywheel. We re-machined the GM flywheel to mimic the DMC flywheel's step,
and are using a stock DMC clutch. I realize this may not last long, but we
figure clutch discs are cheaper than transmissions. At some point if you
keep beefing up the stuff that breaks you just get to the next thing in line
(input shaft, gears, axles, CV joints). A next step would be to put a
metallic face on a stock DMC disc. We explored some alternatives, for
example there is a Toyota 21-spline design that **looks** like it should
work, but the splines are a slghtly different shape and will not mate up
with the DMC trans. The input shaft spec on the DMC/Renault trans seems to
be unique, at least in US-market vehicles.
---The big surprise to me was upon opening up the transmission. Other than
the aluminum shavings all over the place from the failure mentioned above,
the trans was in fine shape. No damage to bearings or gear teeth.
---Design Defect #1 - The original "engineer" had used a GM-type bronze
input bearing, that was much too far into the crank to support the trans
input shaft. The failure caused by this was the destruction of the input
shaft in the area of the splines, but it never broke. We fixed this by
sleeving a stock DMC pilot bearing and putting it in the outer recess of the
crank.
---Design Defect #2 - The Buick engine mounts are all the way at the back
(formerly front) of the engine. The DMC trans mounts are at the opposite end
of the transmission. This leaves the entire assembly unsupported in the
center, which puts a tremendous strain on the (thin casting, remember?)
bellhousing. It was cracked, probably due to the vibration from the
unsupported input shaft and just the unsupported wieght. We added some
renforcement gussets to the bellhousing to try and stiffen it up. We'll fix
this by adding some BMW E30 transmission mounts at the sides of the
bellhousing to try and stabilize the center of the engine/trans combination.

The setup we have built, with the stock DMC clutch, will probably not live
long if Rich decides to show off with lots of smoky burnouts. But, driven
with gusto <<after>> clutch engagement, it should do just fine. I have no
fears about the transmission itself, just the clutch. Next improvement will
have to be a custom disc with metallic facings.

At some point we'll put up more of a pictoral history on this thing. I
expect to have it driveable this weekend, and we hope to have it available
at the midwest Tech session coming up. It does still need a lot of clean-up,
it was driven a lot and certainly was no garage queen!

Another note - according to the owner of the 350-Chevy powered car at
Memphis, he also used a stock DMC transmission but was on his third (or so)
input shaft.

Eh?  my transmission doesn't have a computer!  For anyone who is actually
interested, the porsche g50 6-speed transmission has the same width at
the transaxle, same bolt pattern and same bolt size.  I'm using the stock
Delorean axles.  It even has a similar "reverse" switch.  The
transmission is slightly longer though, and mounts and shifts
differently.

Darryl Tinnerstet owns a supercharged chevy, and I don't think he will
agree that the stock transmission will hold 300hp.  I personally don't
think it will either, considering what it was made to do and what a
porsche transmission costs...

I assume Darryl will speak up to tell you exactly what he modified.  Long
story short, he destroyed at least one transmission part and had it
remade with higher quality materials.  Your best chance at beefing the
stock trans is with upgraded parts (that will fit) from a renault dealer
in Europe.

Me personally, I woudn't trust it. I've had more problems using non-

original things needed. Especailly on the DeLorean, and especially
some something that relies on precision such as the fuel injection

Aside from that, take a look at the item here. it's used, you've no
idea of the history behind it, and it isn't even the same part. I
wouldn't trust it to work properly on the original car that it was
pulled off of, let alone the one you're restoring. The only reason
I'd buy it if I could get a core charge credit for it. If you could
make a profit on that one, then great. Otherwise, consider it a

List,

i bought Don's speaker pods this winter and installed them.  They fit fairly well but i had to have a custom stereo shop put some extra padding around the edges of them to keep cancellation from occuring.  now that they are sealed well, they have lots of kick and punch.  the front sound stage suffers terribly in the DeLorean - these pods will help sort things out a LOT by eliminating some of the dead zones below the line of vision.  they are secured with two screws that screw thru the carpet and into the firewall.

i would highly recommend them but would also like to add that a professional shop that works on stuff like this will be able to make sure they are sealed properly on the back sides.

for the record, that is my article in gullwing magazine.  i'd recommend anyone who is considering even a basic upgrade to their car to read the article to get a good idea of what you are in for!

Subject: DeLorean Car Show Magazine (Time Machines)

If you had a subscription for the second issue of the magazine and have not
received it yet please e-mail me privately.

I don't trust the post office on this one.

A few of you have E-mailed and if you only paid for one magazine but want the
subscription please send in the remaining subscription.

Just for fun

California by far has the highest number of subscriptions followed by the
Northwest group, Chicago and then Cleveland and Europe tied.  Surprisingly
Mississippi has quite a few.

We have made improvements and have added more material so I think you will
enjoy it.

There are still Issue 1 magazines available along with the current issue 2
So if you have been thinking about it, Now is the time.

Thanks for your support

On a lighter note
We have located 4 of the time Machines so far and three of the owners say
they will bring their cars to Pigeon Forge.  No guarantees yet but that is
promising.

Think of it

A class for just time machines.

There are 6 that I know of in the States so if you know of one I don't have
then please let me know.

So far the ones contacted are in NC, IL, KS and I believe OK, I have not
located the FL owner yet or the CA owner any help here is appreciated.
E-mail me privately

Ken

Now I have just finished my first reading of the
current Gullwing Magazine and I am impressed.  Not
being a purist, I found the aritcles in here much to
my liking.  And then, there's Toby Peterson - I have
exchanged emails with him, had seen pictures of his
car, but didn't know much about him.  Now I do.

Keep up the good work Ron, Cheryl and Erica.

This past Saturday evening Delorean Midatlantic had Fred Dellis of
Legend Industries speak and give a Q + A on the Delorean. One of the
questions was about horsepower. Fred said that they were able to dial
in all the horsepower that they wanted but because of durability and
warranty issues they were transmission limited. THEY KEPT BREAKING
INPUT SHAFTS. This was on the 5-speeds, in his opinion the automatic
was even worse although he doesn't remember using any. Fred also said
they had planned to get away from the Renault transmission eventually
anyway. Very hard to deal with Renault. The short answer is if you are
doing any kind of large horsepower increase either with the PRV or an
engine swap you have to figure a way to get rid of the Renault
transmission.

Well I finally got my broken car to Houston and yep, you guessed it: the front lower
control arm was mangled, not entirely unlike Knut's.  Since mine is a high-milage car
(120k+) and the damage appears to be metal fatigue, it appears you all have something to
look forward to in your future.    :-)

I opted to let DMC try to repair the arm, rather than sacrifice my arm-and-leg for the
price of a new one (although the option of a newly fabricated stainless part centainly
has it's appeal).  My concern is now with the arm on the opposite side, which ostensibly
has the same age and stress as the one that just failed....

P.S.  Anybody from the Austin area going to the DMC Open House?  I appear to need a
ride.

Subject: Re: tranny questions (Porsche automatics)

Jim and List,

As Bob wrote, "as for different automatics", Bob is correct that
the Porsche Tiptronic automatic transmissions would be easier to
install, as a Delorean trans conversion, than any other source.
The earlier Porsche automatics, like the ZF4HP22HL found in '84
models would be an easier install than the later model ZF4HP22E
found in '89 models (with a computer) that may require much more
work to allow it to shift "automatically".  Either one of these
Porsche automatics will handle a substantial amount of HP.

Since a lot of the miles on the 97 Time Machine are parade miles,
I'm sure Bob does not mind manually shifting his automatic when
it is necessary.  I'm sure when Bob gets some free time, he will
get the trans computer reprogrammed to work well with the Rover V8.

Rich W.

Subject: DeLorean model of Lee Seiler

Hello everyone, this is the very first time I post a message to the
list, so, I hope everything will be fine. About two year ago I have
ordered a DeLorean model to Lee Seiler on his web site. Today, he
took the money and, unfortunately I don't have any model. My friend
Cheryl Wester told me to post a message because many people are like
me, in a sad position, the money gone but the car does not come. If
anyone has any news about Lee Seiler it will be nice to give me some
news because Lee Seiler does not answer to my e-mail. I think it's
hopeless. Thank you very much. I would like to apologize if they're
any mistake, but I am French and my English is not so good some
times !!!
Sincerely.
Dominique from France.

Ski,

The Porsche ZF4HP22HL and ZF4HP22E are both Tiptronic automatic
4-speed transmissions, with and without computers, respectively.

The Porsche ZF4HP22 series transmissions were used in 911 series
cars, except for some of the 911 C4 all wheel drive cars.

Although most Porsche manual transmissions are designed for use
with stock HP outputs of 450 HP or more, it is probably best not
to push a stock, pre-1994 Porsche Tiptronic transmission beyond
the 300 HP range.

The 993-based, 5-speed Porsche Tiptronic transmission is a whole
other story and can handle well over 400 HP.

Rich W.

Ski,

The ZF4HP22HL is a 4 speed automatic transmission with overdrive.

THe original delorean transmission was a ZF3.

THe HP 22 is the hydraulic pressure clutch diameter.  This is the
largest size.  Smaller ones are 18, and 20.  The original delorean was a
20.

The HL means the valves in the trans are hydraulically controlled These
were 84? to 88 vintage.

The E means the valves are electronically controlled. These were 89 to
90 vintage?  They went to a five speed automatic after this which is too
long for the D.

This transmission was used in the 911 and the Carraras.  (mine came from
a Carrara.)

This trans is rated over 300 HP and 300 ft lb torque according to the
people I talked to at ZF.

BOB
