Hi gang!

Here's another FWIW, I was watching an episode of Fastlane the other day
that ran in mid- or late January (the episode with Jaime Pressly) and,
believe it or not, two of the characters got into a gull-wing car. If I
were directing that episode, I would've used a DeLorean, but, alas, they
didn't. I also didn't know that there was a current production high-end
car with GW's out there... Anybody see it, and know?who makes that
one?

While scale models of the BTTF Delorean and the steam engine train
were used for portions of BTTF 3, Bob Gale and Bob Zemekis talked
extensively about the full scale, actual Delorean that was hit by
the freight train near the end of BTTF 3 (on the BTTF DVD box set).

Bob and Bob mentioned the explosive charge used help the Delorean
dismember upon impact with the train engine.  If you watch this
scene, you can see the explosive charge go off just before impact.
They said the train engineer said he always wanted to do that.

Along with actual Deloreans and small scale models that were used,
several full scale fiberglass mock-ups were also used, such as the
one used during the hover scenes, since light weight models were
needed to work with the forklift devices for take-off and landings.

Later,
Rich

This question is for those people who have done the time machine
conversion.  I have seen on more than one car, that the "Mr. Fusion" is
spelled Mr. Fussion. Was their some copyright business to prevent you
from using Mr. Fusion, or was this just a matter of style.

I also have found another connector that leads to nowhere.  Any help would be
appreciated.  It is a white connector with two female ends and is hanging
down just below the ignition coil ballast resistor.  The wires going to it
are both white.  One has a yellow stripe and the other has either a red or
brown stripe.  Any ideas?  Thanks again,

I own a stock shift DMC12 that was located in Arizona until September
of last year.
I replaced my AZ drive with something Red and sporty looking, it has
a chromed shifter. I parked this in the sun for about an hour in
September 2002, in the low desert, the temperature was about 100F.
When I got in the car to drive home, I could barely touch the
shifter, I learned to shift real fast! I prefer to drive around town
with one hand on the shift, not that day. So speaking from experience
I can assure you that I never experienced the same problem with my
stock shift in the 6 years ive owned the DMC12.

Knut - I'm sure that you're aware of the dangerous situation that you
were facing with the cracked lower control arm (LCA).  These types of
cracks normally start at the welds where the sway bar attachment is.
If the welds aren't properly stress-relieved after welding, residual
stresses can lead to that type of failure.  In your case, it was
probably some edge damage or corrosion that helped start the crack.
After the reports last year of cracked LCA's "in the fleet", we
started to inspect the parts for cracks or other damage at every tech
session.  I can't stress enough the importance of inspecting critical
components like this at every opportunity.  In terms of the bushings,
I have one bushing that is starting to exhibit the same deterioration.
That's why I've been trying to organize urethane bushings.  I keep
running into brick walls with that ... companies seem to be most
interested in profits "up front".  This incident represents a "call to
action" for everybody to remain vigilent when maintaining their cars.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the List.

Hello-

If you downloaded the file stpatdel.avi from the files section, it
was in DiVX format and you need the driver for FFDShow from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow to view it.

To make things MUCH easier, the file has been converted to a more
accepted Mpeg format and kept roughtly the same size (4 meg).  This
has been uploaded to the files section of the Yahoo groups page and
it replaced the other file.

Apologies for the confusion, but I was not the author of the file.

How many time machine replicas are out there now
I know of five.
Bob's in Chicago (at Cleveland show)
The one in NC (at Memphis show)
One in Florida
One in Europe (got PICS of that one)
and I heard there was one more in the Midwest somewhere but I do not know the
owner.

It would be nice to get as many together as we can in one place.
If anyone knows the owners of these let me know and I will try to get them
for Pigeon Forge.  (I know the first two so I don't need information on them)

As the "fleet" of Deloreans age you will see more of this sort of
thing. Other areas of age related deterioration are the following
Radiators, the plastic tanks leak and blow off
Fuel line hoses particularly the return hose on the accumulater
All of the cooling system hoses
Vacuum hoses becomming brittle and hard
Frame rust
Header bottles
Dirty, rusty ground connections
These things I think should be included in any though inspection along
with too many others to mention! Maybe someone with too much time on
their hands could come up with a comprehensive checklist that we can
use at tech inspections. It could also be useful for looking at a
prospective car for a buyer. Having a checklist when inspecting a car
is very helpful so you don't forget to check everything. Every vender
has their version but a standardized one based on the results from
judging at the shows and the judging rules would be nice. Then
everyone would be "working off of the same page" and it could be used
to standardize the level of condition so it isn't arbitrary. Then if
someone describes a car as a #2 everyone could agree on what that
means. I would divide it into safety, mechanical, electrical,
cosmetic, etc so you can prioritize the things that need to be done.

Jason,

Email me and I'll tell you where to get an nicely overhauled GM 125
amp alternator for $30 with free shipping. It'll bolt right on with
no modifications but I suggest one minor mod for perfect belt
alignment. You'll also need to go out and buy a universal bracket at
any auto store.

No matter what you get, install a 100 amp fusible link at the
alternator. I suggest you also open your main harness in the relay
compartment (or remove the backboard) and fuse the brown/red and
brown/blue wires for 10 amps. These are hot feeds to the headlight
switch control circuit and ignition switch and are an electrical fire
waiting to happen.

The car's tendency to fuse well away from the source or not fuse at
all in some cases is bad electrcial design. In addition, running the
main feed through the engine harness without any overcurrent
protection was a dangerous mistake.

Screws fit into tapered recess on upper air assembly. If you're using
automatic idle speed motor, only need to snug male taper on screws
against matching female taper on air assembly.

As David T pointed out, screw closest to air sensor plate is one that
lets air into manual idle circuit. If it's snug, other two (balancing
screws driver and passenger side of U pipes) aren't doing a thing.
Can't remove of course without creating vacuum leak from outside
world. Are sealed with O-rings -- better snug down to avoid vacuum
leak from deteriorated rubber.

Subject: Lower Control Arms

Hello List - I wanted to ask a specific question to any of you "metal
heads" out there.  Does anyone happen to know the alloy and temper of
the OEM lower control arms?  Assuming that part of the problem stems
from improper stress relieving after welding, this information can be
used to prescribe an appropriate stress relief process, for those that
want it.  I could probably have a lab workup done on a piece of an
LCA, but if anybody has a ready answer, that would be great.  Of
course, this may not be the ONLY cause for the failures.  Corrosion
pitting, impact damage, and hard use can all lead to some form of
failure.  But, if we can get the parts to relax during refinishing,
that would definitely help.  This information would also be good if
somebody were to weld pieces onto the LCA to "box it in" a little for
added stiffness.  The same stress relief should be done after that.
Thanks a bunch for any information you might have handy.

Subject: Polyurethane bushings

Has anyone out there had any luck in getting to fit any polyurathane
bushings in our cars? I took the front sway bar bushings off and
they are very sad. I will wait for about a week and then "research"
here we come. Any onfo would be appriciated no matter what bushing

(Moderators note: An earlier post this evening had a web site which apparently has a complete discussion of the BTTF trilogy. Might be a better place to find answers regarding this.)

I doubt they used a real car for the freight train scene because the car
just smashed into pieces, and you cant see the fiberglass underbody
when the stainless panels fly everywhere.

Happy St. Patty's Day everyone! Just wishing everyone a safe, and happy
holiday!

Aside from that, it's also the 3 year anniversary of DeLorean ownership for
me, so I've got another reason to celebrate! Although it sure doesn't seem like
it's been that long... So to everyone here who has helped me along the way,
thank you very much! I'll be sure and toast a Guinness to all of you tonight!

Happy Holidays!
