The water pumps were made in Italy and were used on several engines like the
DeLorean and the Volvo. If the pulley won't go down far enough, then it
wasn't pushed down far enough or they used a spacer in the back under the
pulley that's to big. The pulleys that P.J.Grady builds and I use on my pumps
as well have the spacer built in for the correct depth.

<< The previous owner of my Delorean replaced the water pump
with a Volvo part. It appears the pulley will not go far enough on
the shaft to line up with crankshaft and alternator. Anyone know if
this should have worked or what the correct replacement part
would be?

Subject: Strange VIN addition
Hello list-
A fellow DML member noticed an oddity on my car this weekend. Below my VIN plate there is an additional plate saying "compliance with radio interference." His D is an '83, and didn't have this. I don't recall ever seeing this on any car now that he brought it up. There's even a D on ebay which is pretty close to my VIN... and it doesn't have this plate (I'm 10115, the ebay car is 10350). I should note that my large VIN plate is higher up on the sill than normal to accomodate this additional plate. So does anyone know the story behind all of this?

Subject: 2/8 D-A-R-T cruise
Members of the AZ-D cruised up to our new shop in Prescott Valley on
Saturday,
The trip to D-A-R-T was eventful to say the least. It had rained
early in the morning and was raining on and off throughout the cruise up.
We started with two DeLoreans and a Cavalier in Gilbert. 45 minutes
northwest we met another DeLorean and our club President in his trusty
Taurus wagon. From there we headed "up" to Prescott Valley, somewhere
around 5500 feet in elevation and some 85 miles north. For the first time
in it's 20 years my car finally encountered snow, once around 3500 feet and
then again around 5000 feet. Not too bad. The roads were wet but stayed
mainly clear until we got into PV where they had dropped dirt to help keep
the roads free of ice. I'm guessing there was some salt mixed in there too.
The D-A-R-T shop opened specially for us this Saturday. Proprietor
Ryan Gould was there waiting for us as were new club members Rocky, Joey,
and Jonathan. Jonathan's car was there as well and we got to see some
racing history as he bought his car from Arie Lyundyke. Ryan greeted us
with a Krispy Kreme breakfast and then my car went up in the air for some
tweaking. Ryan also gave it a once over and we found a small transmission
fluid leak at the seal. Have to take care of that.... We arrived at 10am
and didn't end up leaving until after dinner at 10pm. Thanks to our
Hawaiian connection of John and Mike for the awesome lunch provided.
Anyway, the day and the cruise were both a success. Most of my
installs were completed on Saturday and went well. I still have a bit more
work that needs to be done so I'll be heading back there next week to have
Ryan finish up everything. He did a lot of electrical wiring and it really
looks nice. Almost all of the wires were run underneath or through the
center console so they are invisible.
I'd like to invite anyone interested in making the trip to come with
us next Saturday, 2/15. I know a few club members need their TABs removed
and replaced as well as some small things here and there. My car should
take about an hour or so to complete so there will be plenty of time.
"Get out and drive" seems to be Ryan's motto and that's just what we
did....:) I highly recommend Ryan for both maintenance and custom work. I
am very pleased with how my car came out and will be back for the finishing
touches. I hope to see you all there!

I have an 81 DMC and when it get running for about 10 min or so it
starts to idol very poorly. The oil pressure and RPM's go up and down
while sitting at a stop. When I get going again it goes away, but
every time I stop again it comes back. I thought that it might need a
tune-up but maybe something else. Any ideas??? Thanks

Maybe I can shed some light on this one,
I have electronic cruise control installed on my D. Since I have
the digital dash, I have the angle drive hooked into the lower speedo
cable and then into a pulse generator. No lambda counter and no upper
cable since my speedo reads off the pulse generator. I would imagine
you could find a pulse generator with an output too. I find the
typical pulse generators run at 8,000 ppm, but this varies and the
electronic CC can handle all of them.
Anyway, I didn't want any miscellaneous equipment installed in my
engine bay. I chose the route of putting the CC brain in the trunk
and running the wires to the servos and pulse generator right into the
footwell from there. I have the servos and switches hooked up right
to the accelerator and brake pedals. This way there's nothing in the
engine compartment and the brain for the CC didn't take up any prime
real estate in the passenger compartment. Except for the brain box in
the trunk and the switch mounted piggy-back on the turn signal/horn
stalk, you'd never know I had cruise control installed.

I have seen this plate on several 1983 Canadian spec models (17,000's)
but have only seen this on one other 1982 model, which is a project
car that Marty Maier had in his backyard last year. Until seeing the
plate under Marty's 82 VIN, I thought it was only on Canadian models.
This plate is on my 83 Canadian spec, High Powered D, VIN...17063.

I used to think that these were primarily on 17XXX vin's but they same to be
scattered about on a lot of 1982 and 1983 cars. Does anyone have a 1981
with this plate? I met a guy named Art Royce out at Barrett-Jackson last month
- he was one of the Technical Representatives for the original DMC. I will drop
him an email and see if he remembers the significance of it.

I've agree one hundred percent here with Matt Owens that D-A-R-T
was just a great experience. I meet up with everyone in Prescott
valley at around 10:00 PST and was I in for a bit of a shock. The
Arizona club is by far one of the friendliest bunch of car enthusiast
I have ever met. It was really a great experience to watch all these
delorean owners and enthusiast looking over cars sharing information
and watching Ryan working on them and answering various questions.
Personally I can't wait till March 1st to see the club again in
phoenix.

That sounds like the club which published a little folding mag called "De
Gullwing". I belonged to it for a year or two way back when owning one was

Hello -
i have this same problem from time to time and i think i have tried
everything!
things to check:
1. check all vacuum lines for proper connection and free of cracks or damage
2. replace spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor. gap properly!
3. check timing
4. check ignition advance solenoid for proper operation (located adjacent to
rear of fuel distributer)
5. check and/or replace fuel injectors
6. check gas tank parts for loose/collapsed/kinked hoses. check fuel pump for
proper flow (2 liters in 30 sec? check the shop manual, i forget)
7. replace fuel filter
8. check intake manifold and W-pipe for tightness
9. check brass tube from idle motor for o-ring tightness and alignment
(common problem, easily fixed with patience)
10. send your entire fuel system from the firewall to the injectors to Rob
Grady for cleaning and testing (about $350 labor + parts).
11. check idle speed microswitch for proper connection and proper operation
when car is at idle.
12. make sure the frequency valve buzzes and the idle motor hums
13. check CO mixture plug for vacuum leaks
14. check and adjust valve clearance
15. replace Lambda sensor
16. absolute last resort - adjust CO mixture (have an experienced owner do
this one!)
that's about all i can think of. a wascally idle can be caused by so many
damn things that it's tough to track down right away. if you go thru this
list you will probably get to the problem, but if you are like me, you will
have done everything (except having a computerized CO adjustment) w/o getting
the idle to settle down all of the time. unfortunately, a slightly wobbly
idle is a CHARACTERISTIC of this engine that is caused by the lambda system
constantly making adjustments. it shouldn't be very extreme though.
Martin made a post last year giving instructions on how to dial out the idle
with the brass screws, but this should not be done unless you are positive
that EVERYTHING including the CO adjustment is 100% perfect.

Vacuum leak. Diagnose with spray carb cleaner at all possible sources
(that can be reached! Ported vacuum switch is under intake manifold).
Isolate everything forward of engine at big take off (passenger intake
rail). Don't forget to test fuel injector seals, cold start tube
(shoot between cylinders 1 & 2), and throttle plate shaft.
Vacuum leaks are a low RPM problem.

Hi All
I have a problem with one of the cars in the DOC that I'm having trouble
tracing.
One of the fuses (I forget which) powers the interor lamps, door marker
lights, bonnet lamp and engine compartment lamp. Each has a purple +12
wire.
On this particular car, the bonnet lamp works, the engine compartment
doesn't but we don't care about that one anyway, but the door and interior
lights don't work at all. All grounds are good. The wiring diagram shows
the fuse supplying a cluster of 4 purple wires, and I know one at least is
working. Can anyone shed any light (hur hur) on where in the car the break
might be - ie where is that union?
